I've done just about everything. Say your race is on Saturday...
1. I've taken Friday off and ran easy on Thursday. Had stiff legs the morning of the race, but ran a PR.
2. Didn't take any days off but did really slow, low mileage prior to race. Ran horribly.
3. Took Thursday off, ran Friday easy, ran REALLY bad.
I'd like to add that I've done an abbreviated track workout every week prior to a race. Like 600's 400's 200's. No Vo2Max stuff. When I've done this, the results have been good.
But....
I'm about to attempt taking two days off (Thursday and Friday) prior to running a 5K. The reason I'm going to try this is because I took two consecutive days off about a month ago because I thought I might have had a stress fracture. When I decided to run on it, it was clearly the best run I had in months. 6:10 pace never felt that effortless.
