A meet filled with disappointments

I think wheating can be all right. If he builds enough to get through the trials he can be ready for the olympics. He may be very talented but without hard work (which he lost due to injury) he won't be at his peak performance level.

I'm not counting him out yet.

Honestly, HOW is Rupp NOT a Medal Contender? He's certainly not a lock-in, but right now I would pick him over Kenenisa.

On the other had, Merrit/James looks like a great rivalry and Sanya Richards and Alison Felix are looking good.

Keep in mind that this was a season opener for a number of big-name athletes, including Borza. That said, it's hard to see Yuri really being a medal contender if he runs like that, but hopefully he'll round in to form come July.

I think it's legitimate to view Rupp as a medal contender, at least in the 10k, if things go his way. It does look like the mid-distance American men have a bit of work to do to be in contention for medals, but you can't write them off yet.

For the most part the US sprinters were looking sharp though.

anyone who bets against Bekele after today - not sharp but still time for HIM to get sharp - is seriously overestimating Rupp and underestimating Bekele. Remember the 10000m last year after Bekele was man-handled in an earlier race?If anyone knows how to peak for the Olympics it's Bekele.

I assume Rupp's goal race is the 10k, not the 5k. So how can you take anything negative from this race? He has good speed and good strength right now, which make him a medal threat (likely only for bronze, but still). If this were any runner but Rupp, people wouldn't be hating on him: a 3:34, 12:58, 26:48 guy.

Who are these dozen or so medal contenders that you speak of. You make it sound as though this was some B level race somewhere. You do realize that both the world record holder and world champion were both in this race right? Not to mention 5 other guys with sub 13 pr's. This was a world class field that Rupp got 3rd in. He got 2nd in one last year. Rupp is very much a medal contender, and anyone who thinks differently doesn't understand the sport.
