Normally I would agree with a sentiment like this but he didn't have to go much faster than tempo pace except the 1500 and 800. Burning out is when you go to the well often, which he did not have to do.
And it was good practice for heats which he will have to run at the olympics should he choose to run the 5k. Also good practice if he decides to run the 10 and the 5, because then he has 3 races in a week span and they will be a lot faster than 31 minute 10ks and 1445 5ks.
Basically he did some tempo runs, closing fast. Then some under distance racing on top of that. I don't think this in particular will fry him.
