Kiprop was leading coming into the home straight, but got clipped by Kiplagat. He almost came back for the win...

Not since 2004, when Bernie nipped El Guerrouj at the line to win 3:27.40 to 3:27.64 in Zurich. To be fair though, while I think the idea of the world record falling this year is a ludicrous assertion, we may well have seen a sub 3:29 tonight were it not for that regrettable tangling between Kiprop and Kiplagat... then again, maybe not.

Why are these guys running faster in May than they did all of last year, which was a World Championship year?

Have they really improved by such a margin because it's an Olympic year? If so they should be running 3:26 by London. I've seen nothing from either in their career to suggest they are capable of anything approaching that time. Hell, I don't believe EL G ran that time without "help".

The Olympics this year are about 3 weeks earlier than last year's WC's.

They are gearing up to peak earlier this year.

Plus there may be even a little more ready because of the hype of the Olympics and the pressure to even make the team.

Russell Brown ran 3:35 in April last year by the way.

They may not run faster than this all year.

A lot last year's races weren't set up to go fast or they didn't go after it.

Kiplagat and Kiprop did not face each other last year outside of their Trials and the WC.

Kiplagat ran 3:29 two years ago and they are both young so it seems to reason that they do have more in them, maybe 3:27 high if they race aggressively and go after the rabbits.

Chepseba ran 3:31.8 last year at Doha in early May.

That shows how you can run fast in May if you are fit and have a good race set up.

This wasn't even a PR for Kiplagat so it's hard to say he has improved by such a margin.
