He spends all that money to look "good" when out in public, yet he drives a piece-of-crap car. What?!!?!?!!?!?!

Your post says more about you then it does about the guy you saw. And it what is says is that you are jealous loser with crappy priorities.
I have an iPad, iPhone and don't even own a car.
Do you dress in fancy outfits?
No one uses Apple anymore, it's the new Atari
$20,000 can buy you a pretty nice car. I would not associate the word jalopy with that dollar amount.
That almost describes me, except my car is an older BMW model. Still runs really well and doesn't look anything like a jalopy. just maybe not worth that much anymore.
op is a bit of an idiot.
I would way rather have a functional great phone and slightly crappier car.
Not that $20k is crappy, to me that is a nice vehicle. Think cars are the worst investment you can make. Get a 10 year used vehicle and you are smart.
OP = stupid

I was thinking more of a douche, but stupid is also correct.
Cars are more important than phones.
Look at all of the people walking around with smart phones and tablets.
Now how many people do you see driving $40K cars?
Not so many.
A man's car is his single most important piece of property.
It's a reflection of his personna.
You will be sized up instantly by the kind of car you drive.
No one is going to bother with your investment portfolio, net worth or sense of frugality.

Dude get over yourself. I would take my $13,000 "jalopy" over pretty much any $40,000 car you could offer. And I'm willing to bet that my car says absolutely nothing about my personality.
Really?
If you would incur no additional cost you would't trade your $13K jalopy for a new sports sedan of your choice?
I guess you do have a nothing personality.

Nope. My car does exactly what I need it to do.
My brother Joe and I drive a jalopy, and we strike terror in the hearts of smugglers worldwide. I'd be careful what you say about jalopies and the people who drive them.
Jalopies ARE great for striking terror.
General question to no one in particular:
Suppose you were trying to sell your house and you were choosing between two real estate agents.
One had a 15 year old Subaru and an iPhone.
The other had a new Mercedes but a flip phone Nextel.
All other things being equal, which one would you choose to represent you and show customers your house?

Which is to pick up fat chicks.

The guy with the Subaru and iPhone. The Nextel (Sprint now) walkie-talkie thing is annoying as hell and I wouldn't take the chance on the guy using it while showing my house to potential buyers.

I'd probably find some third agent who takes the subway like everyone else in my neighborhood. Either of the ones who insist on driving to my place are going to be late for every appointment.
If you are going from A->B, you can drive anything.
If you are engaged in sales, you need to look sharp. The tax benefits of leasing a high end car make it worth it.
But you can get a good looking used Benz that looks every bit as impressive as the latest model. The truth is 90% of people don't know much about cars beyond the make. So they just see you pulling up in a recent model Benz. They have no idea if it is a 2012 or 2005.
I used to own a Porsche 968. It did not cost that much to buy or maintain. But it looked great, chicks dug it, and....I could say I drove a Porsche.
With bonus, I normally make over $750k a year...
I drive a 12 year old car that is probably worth less than $5k. Cars are absolutely the biggest waste of money. I am better off than literally anyone I know, and I still can't understand spending $50k on a car. What a waste of money? It is not that I care about my piece of crap or that I dislike nice cars, I just can't get over what a tremendous waste of money they are.
But that is just me, I have always been a value investor and a value buyer.
