Yes, he has a masters degree in exercise science.
I don't know the specifics of Magness's personal or professional connections to Nike before getting the Oregon Project gig, but I don't think there is another coach in the country with a style so similar to Alberto's. Sure, I'd let him coach me.
Would Coach Magness trust you to be under his charge?
He self-coached himself from a 4:00 high school miler to a 4:08 collegiate miler and then to a 4:15 post-collegiate miler.
yes.
Yes.
Absolutely not. As mentioned he coached himself from 4:01 to 4:15.
I used to be somewhat of a fan. The guy has read everything there is to read about running. On his old site he had a lot of good info (I haven't checked out his new site) and would post his running logs. What I couldn't figure out is why he would say "train like this. Don't do this" and then he himself would do exactly what he preached NOT to do. For whatever reason the guy can have all the information in the world but just can't seem to figure out how to use it. I'm all for understanding the basic physiology underlying training, but he's proof that that's not only unnecessary, it might be counter-productive if you start to worry more about your blood lactate concentrations than how you're feeling etc.
I still think he has things to offer the sport just given the amount of information he's accumulated. I would be interested to hear him talk on anything running, but I would not trust him to coach anyone right now. I could possibly be convinced otherwise though.
He is coaching ciaran o'lionard and jackie areson
Jackie Areson seems to be doing quite well with him as her coach. Steve Magness seems to be quite good. What the coach ran or didn't run doesn't necessarily directly tie into their coaching ability. Bill Bowerman is a good example. http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/248561-2012-Stanford-Payton-Jordan-Cardinal-Invitational/video/632622-Coach-Steve-Magness-of-Nike-Oregon-Project-discusses-his-role-in-group-and-scientific-outlook-on-running-at-2012-Payton-Jordan-Invite <------ Interviewer- "I want to talk about the science...When did that side of the sport start to interest you?" Magness- "uhhh probably when my own running went to crap"

Known him for a while.
Magness didn't coach himself in college or post college. Marco Ochoa and Scott Razcko post collegiate.
He's coached Areson to 15:18, O'Lionaird to 1:48/3:54 indoors, Schmitz to 3:39, and a slew of very good HS kids who are still excelling in college.
Magness may have had other 'coaches' but he was always questioning the workouts and not believing in the system which clearly shows by his abysmal performances in college. He always thought he knew better.
He is like the scientist the President turns to for technical answers in the movies, useful but not the leader. He lacks the personality of a head coach. Give him time.

The fact that you are judging him by random mile times show that you are incredibly ingorant. He ran 3:46 in the 1500 in college in 2004, and ran 3:47 in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Maybe you didn't know, they run the 1500 for the most part after HS. Those are 404/405 type times.
Granted he didn't improve in college, but what you posted above is just incredibly dumb.

I would trust Magness to coach me; I wouldn't trust him to coach himself.
When I saw him present at the queens distance summit, and then renato canova get up and say if English was his language, he'd give the same presentation magness gave...well, if he's got canovas endorsement that's good enough for me.
4:05 milers with a phys ed degree. dime a dozen. right place at the right time. guy is a complete GEEK. If I wanted alberto LIGHT with a tranquilizer id ask for it specifically.

This is EXACTLY what I was about to post.
