In 1980, as a kid, they didn't make any real running shoes. Because my foot was small, I ran in the Nike Yankee (women's version-smaller). Yes, I am a male, but I colored the light blue swoosh black!

Well, not much of a winner, except that I bought the Karhus from Al Cantello, the Javelin champ, from his barn in Morrisville, VT, where he had a stash. I thought that was cool, but I did not really win much until my competition retired as I entered my 70s and chased Max King up Mount Cranmore in N.H. and won the fast fogey section of the national hill racing championship by eight minutes in Nike Shox. Max went on to win worlds in Albania.
Yea, this is the reissue one that came out a month or so ago. This appears to be a mesg upper, but mine are justr egular nylon. I also have a SMU Black with silver swoosh. I remember testing the prototype American Eagle---it was more like the Skylon, still extremely lightweight and great on the foot. I think I ran in them up to 10k and then I actually used Terra TC's for longer races. I loved that phylon!!!

This book, "Nike Chronicle", has every Nike running shoe made from 1972-roughly 1984. Also, early Tigers. A must-have for the true running shoe fan.
My first set of spikes Adidas Meteor, the same shoe i saw Jim Ryun use. they were so thin and light they felt great but only lasted a season. if that.
My first real flats were either the Tigers, the Karhu's or some English shoe that used Ron Hill in the catalog. We got them all mail order. I liked the Tigers best, once you got them broke in they were fantastic. They were white leather with red & blue stripes. Once they were broken in we would not wear socks they fit so nice, just like a second skin. then eventually they would crack and we would wrap duct tape around them to hold them together while we broke in another pair. A good two weeks of blisters on the back of your heel before they were decent. We always kept the duct tape pair to use when we had a run with alot of stream crossings. the water just ruined the shoes. In college we ran in waffle racers. It was so cool to put on a shoe and have it fit right away.Almost every XC runner at the time used them. I remember lining up at my first College Championship meet and the first thing i thought was "we are all wearing the same shoes". All different uniforms but every runner wearing yellow & green Oregon Waffle racers.
i can remember my first time I ever ran. I was intrigued by my neighbor. I bought a pair of Brooks Supervillanova running shoes with my paper route money....the rest is history. Still running 32 years later. Running is my drug of choice. I like running it makes me smile...think I'll run another mile.

I've been in Thailand for the past month. Running here and still loving my Adidas Glide 6 Boost. I had a chance to get on the internet today and couldn't resist posting on this thread.
My first running shoes: Jox by Thom Mcan, 1976. Gave me terrible, bloody blisters, but I trained AND raced in them for my first track season. Other than the blisters, no injuries of any kind that season. By today's standards they were absolutely horrible shoes, but I had no idea what to buy. They looked like Tiger knock-offs. Mine were just like these, but blue with yellow stripes. My next shoes were the original Nike Waffle Trainer and then the Nike LDV in bright yellow with a blue swoosh.
Hey -- I had the Jayhawks, too. Just looked and there is a vintage pair on ebay for $200. That's a high price. Wish I could get them. In fact, I still have the box from my Jayhawks, but no shoe.
I got a pair of used Converse my freshman year in cross country. The first pair of shoes I bought was the Brooks Vantage and then the Nike Yankee (1980 or so)
I don't think my first shoe even had a name, per se. It was a 1961 black, leather Adidas for $9.
