Cain demolishes the Penn field (including Ajee Wilson and Angel Piccirillo) to win by 8 seconds with a 62 last 400 meters!
She is definitely the real deal and has a great shot at breaking Hasay's high school record in the 1500 this summer.

just saw that and you spared LR a headliner 'Cain was able'
Able was Cain
Nice time, good for Mary Cain.
Relays are stupid events anyway, that infringe on the individual talents of the athletes.
It was a little strange at first that she would leave Coach Mitchell and the girl's team, but you can't blame her for wanting to challenge herself and reach new levels. She is obviously doing well in the new program and I think that in time it will be seen as the right choice.
Besides, she does not come across as a bratty, arrogant high schooler; instead, she seems articulate, likable, funny, and humble in her interviews.
She is an incredible talent, hard worker, and nice young girl. I'm a big fan.
Holy Guacamole, that is quick!
The next great New York runner following in the wake of the Elmira great Molly Huddle?

It's nice that she is talented, but the fact that she told her HS team that she will no longer run relays and she won't run for the girls coach says alot more. She and her parents are selfish jerks, and the "it's all about me" attitude sucks.
i don't want to wish anything bad on her, but I am not a fan. I will pay attention to this to see how it all turns out.
So she should give up her chance of becoming a high school record holder so she can run for the team? That sounds incredibly selfish if the team felt that way. Are they even good enough to win a state title this year? State titles don't even matter as much as the individual titles.
Did the team or coach even have any part in her running success?
So please explain why you feel your way?

Depends on her team. If theyre good she should have stayed. if they were insanely dedicated she should have stayed.
If they weren't dedicated, she shouldve dropped them. I hate when I'm forced to run a relay before my events because I get tired while running for 9th place. i wouldn't mind it if all of my teammates actually tried.
Jim Mitchell is a hall of fame coach. And although I agree with JoeGarland, Cain might be the once in a lifetime athlete who needs to train and race differently than the rest of the girls.
Jim Mitchell is a renowned Coach all over the country. He has been coaching at Bronxville high school for 32 years and is beloved by all of his athletes. The fact that Mary Cain disrespected him and left his team because she felt she was not getting enough attention is ridiculous! Her former teammates are not angry because Mary won't run relays, they are angry because she did not participate in the team, took Mitchell for granted, and embarrassed them and him in front of the high school running world.
High school aged athletes in many sports choose their coaches/teams/programs in order to maximize their development (hockey, soccer, gymnastics, ice skating, for example). This is true in other domains too (performing arts, chess, etc.).
Time will tell but that is incredible. I would bet on her. Suzy Favor ran 4:19.0 as a sophomore for 1500 which is about the same and she got better every year. Nobody at that age needs to be heralded as the future. That will take a while. One to definitely watch though.
This young lady is the real deal. All kinds of range, very similar to Mary Slaney. I would think the HS 1500 record is a very real possibility.
Partial video.
Would have run 4:38.xx if she hadn't slowed down the last 10 meters.
running ain't no team sport bro.

I can see why Mary moved on.
I don't know what conditions were like, but NONE of the college women ran faster for their 1600 legs on the DMR (including Reid).

Talk about hyperbole!! Get over yourself, it's just HS track, no one cares about you and your petty jealousies. Mary made the right decision given this scenario, good for her.
I have had the great pleasure of getting to wittness quite a few of Mary's races. Win or lose she is always a real classy kid. I always have a feeling I am going to see something special everytime she toes the line and more often than not I do! 62 second last quarter! Just awesome! As for the coaching situation, Mary comes from a very good family and is a level headed kid. Any of what goes on should be between Mary her family and the coaches. Everybody else just sit back and enjoy watching her run!

It's a sad story and I hope everybody can come together over the next couple years.
The Bronxville girls and the parents involved are all generally really nice, thoughtful people. Jim Mitchell is an A+ coach. Mitchell really deserves better respect here, and the parents and athletes need to try to humble themselves; it's freaking HS. The boys coaches that are training her are competent, nice guys, if not accomplished, but the situation is far from ideal. Jim's teams will continue to win (the other girls are also fantastic runners) and people can do the math on where they would be if Mary was anchor leg if they want. But I think it is Mary's loss to not have the same experience that many highly successful, record setting, Bronxville girls had during their HS years.
