Jack Daniels Marathon Training A Plan Phase 1 suggests that a marathon build up should have around 9 weeks of a build up with the absence of workouts and just a single long run.
My question is; for an sub elite 5km-10km runner moving up to 1/2 to marathon is it really essential to spend this much time without quality workouts? How many elites actually take this amount of time without doing workouts? I'm thinking a 8-10 mile tempo run at marathon pace and one tempo run per week plus a long run would be a better build up before starting Phase 2 which involves longer tempos and intervals.
