Anyone who talks about a sub 2hr marathon is completely out to lunch and does not really know or understand distance running. Points wise, a sub 2 mara is equivalent to a 12:16 5k, a 25:44 10k, a 57:10 1/2 mara... We are nowhere near these performances and nor will we be anywhere near them in any letsrunner lifetime. While the marathon WR has had significant chunks taken out of it as of late, such improvements have come directly from the movement of young african athletes off the track into big city marathons (not to mention the countless calculated WR assaults of Geb, arguably the greatest of all time). The point is that these are rare cicumstances in the history/progression of the WR. I predict that the marathon wr will come down to 2:02s in the next five years where it will plateau for several years if not decades. Look at the progression of the 10000m Wr: 14 years ago Geb ran 26:22! Question: When do you think a 10000m runner will be running well under 26 mins (~61.5 per 400m)? Answer: no time in the foreseeable future. Bekele will not lower his current WR anymore and there are simply no others within striking distance of running sub 26 for 10k. And until sub 26 has happened or is even possible there is no really no point discussing a sub 2 marathon.
