It seems strange but I have seen this in Asafa Powell, Donovan Bailey, Ato Boldon, Jeremy Wariner and others top sprinters.

I use mine to time up my blow-out runs before the race... 30mins before the race I usually have my first all-out sprint.

Awesome.
If you're not exhausted at the start line, you're not trying hard enough.
So they can get their 25m, 50m, and 75m splits obviously

Interesting. More details, please.
It is fairly common knowledge amongst world class sprinters that you want your first 25 to be the 2nd fastest 25, the last 25 to be the fastest, and the middle 25s to be fairly even. So a 9.9 would look like 2.4, 2.6, 2.6, 2.3. In an event as short as the 100, there is no room for error so the watch keeps them on target pace.

I think they just don't want them to be swiped while they are racing.
Michael Johnson wore a watch also.
sarcasm?

This is balls.

They hang to the opposite side of the watch. It balances them out.

Yeah, like you can actually read a watch going 0.85 seconds/10 meters.
As Mo once said, 100 meters is a choreographed dance. Practice makes permanent. Accelerate to 60 then RELAX (not hold on).
