A friend wants to preserve a race number and give it to someone else for framing (long story, does not have anything to do with runner's ego).
How can one protect a race bib during a race from becoming a crinkled up, creased mess? I had considered suggesting putting it in a clear plastic/vinyl sheet, much like one would find in a scrap book album. Could one safely iron (on low, dry heat) a race bib?
There is a process called dry mounting that frame shops use in places like Michael's and Jo-Ann fabrics. Basically it adheres the paper to a foam board so it is rigid and free of wrinkles. I'm not sure if they could do it to the kind of paper that race bibs are made of but you could look into it.

Why would your friend want it to be perfect out of curiosity?
I would think that the bib represents the experience of the race, which often leaves you feeling a bit crinkled. I have a few bibs and stick on numbers framed from some of my prs,
they're pretty blasted but it's "as raced"
