Manzano 3:55 in 90 degree heat on a high school track!

amazing run, to be sure! however, PLEASE, there is no reason to exaggerate. it was brilliant enough as it is without having to do that. first off, it was NOT 90 degrees- far from it. as i look outside right now, it is 75 degrees, and i live right here on south congress. second, this is more than a high school track. this is a top notch, all weather tartan that is just as nice as any track around- collegiate or otherwise. the bowl it is situated in provides great cover from the wind as it blew this morning as well. the pacers were perfect, and left it to him for a nice last lap. congrats to Leo for $1000 for every second under the 4 minute mark that was donated to his charity. well done, and kudos to a really good man.

kind of wish hernandez kept going. he looked good and strong.

great race by Leo today. It was warm and humid and did FEEL much hotter than the upper 70s/low 80s it was. At 10:00 it was over 90% humidity and hazy and just up by 12:00. The pacers did an excellent job making the fast time possible. I would not go so far as to say that the track is anywhere near world class. It had clearly seen better days as it was faded and had some bare spots. It is very firm with little give so it was conducive to running the short stuff. I would not want to run a 10k on it in spikes.

Either way Manzano had a great solo effort as besides the rabbit he was on his own after 800m. Second place was a good 15 seconds back. Manzano is the easy favorite to win the trials in my book.

It was 75F with the sun out during the entire race. There was also a slight but constant headwind on the home stretch. Leo had to pass a slower woman in the field on the final lap which makes his run even more impressive.

The two pacers did a fantastic job. I was talking to Stephan Pifer before the race. He was there to help Leo get the record. Jacob Hernandez was under total control and also did a great job. Without the pacers, Leo would have had a tough time running by himself.

It was great race to watch. Seeing Leo run that last lap in solo mode was an impressive feat and makes me think he's going to have a good spring / summer.

BTW: That track is the Texas School for the Deaf. It is an older track, ~2.5 miles from University of Texas. It is still soft enough to allow some good times as evidenced by Leo's performance. It was a treat for the central Texas running community to see this run on home turf !!!! Go Leo.....

What's that worth in a 1500?

If you deduct 17 seconds from a mile time, it's usually pretty close to an equivalency for 1500m. Mostly because the mile is run so much less than the 1500m, most runners have superior 1500m times to mile times (see Gabe Jennings, 3:35 1500m, 3:59 mile).

So long story short, this 3:55 is worth about a 3:38 or so. Not bad at all for late March.

A 24 year old Texan raced a time of 3:49.46 1 Mile in Texas on Saturday July 31 1993.

Then when 31 he raced another fast Mile in Texas in 3:51.75 on Saturday June 24 2000. 2nd place finished aggressively in 3:51.90. 3rd 4:07.87 by 38 year old. These best times were run by an 800 specialist who was very good at 1500 and 400 and he ran a marathon in the Decembers leading up to these fast times. It was all recorded. One of his races was online somewhere.

There are many fast tribal times through the years. One of the Texas girls ran a women only race 3000 in 8:31.60 at 31 on Saturday July 8 2000. She was an 800 specialist too and still runs fast. It was suffocating hot that time of year in Texas. So these are Times by Texan born runners run in Texas but not getting outside recognition due to being of tribal descent and run in tribal meets.
