I was thinking about this in relation to board shorts, which are multi-colored and graphical. It's nearly impossible to find a pair of shorts not in a solid basic color. What's the deal.

Why? One reason: Richard Simmons.
Try adding some Tabasco sauce. Yum.
BOA has some cool designs
I run in cutoff jeans. I have no problems with fashion, but sometimes I must fend off the mob of hawt female runners with daddy issues. That is also not a problem.

+1
However, if you like the look you can still find it, along with rainbow, tiger stripes, etc.

I actually saw someone running in the Texas shorts recently.
its a reaction to the 90s
Because we get enough shit from peopel for running in the relatively normal looking ones that we have.
Imagine how bad it would be if they looked like boardshorts!
You can be the wacky dude in the local 5k that runs in American flag shorts if you want. But I think if another dude shows up wearing them also, you have to duel to the death.
Boardshorts work for the CrossFitters. They're totally badass. And they prlly haven't even billabonged once in their life.
Seriously would it kill some designer to throw a stripe or some colored mesh on a damn short? Same thing with singlets. Sucony has some decent ones but that's about it.
Just wear Tempo shorts.

Because black is "wisdom's sober hue".

I like (what I assume is) the allusion but you should reread your Milton.
John Milton wrote:
And therefore to our weaker view,
O'er-laid with black, staid Wisdom's hue;
Black, but such as in esteem,
Prince Memnon's sister might beseem,
Or that starr'd Ethiop queen that strove
To set her beauty's praise above
I don't want fancy designs on my shorts to distract peoples' attention from the giant bulge in the front of said shorts. It takes time to get all those socks shoved down there and I'd hate to think that I'm doing it for nothing.
I do my 2.5 hour long run in Carhart overalls. Plenty of places to put gels, gloves, tools etc..

It was indeed supposed to be an allusion to "Il Penseroso." I don't know how I got "wisdom's sober hue" in my head; it does read nicely. Thanks for the tip - I'd hate to misquote Milton to one of my literary friends in real life. Actually most of my friends probably don't know who John Milton is, but I still like to be correct in my allusions, so thanks.
