Pretty premature to call him finished. Then again, once an athlete enters the "injury cycle," it's terribly difficult to escape. He should forget about 2012 and focus on completely recovering. Not that it's what ultimately did him in, but it's a shame he got pulled into that 10,000 last year in Oregon to "defend" his AR when his hamstring wasn't 100%. His coach should've known better.
You mean the Payton Jordan in California? I think that was the only 10000M he ran last year. And that was just pace making. But you might be right.
In itself an injury isn't a terrible thing. But I think its true that you can get into an injury cycle. I can imagine its tough for an elite runner to get a serious injury. They sit around for a couple months and then have to stick to minimal training. All the time they are mentally going crazy because they know in their head what their body can do and they want to do the hard training. They fall for the temptation to train hard before they are ready and they get injured again.
I don't know if CS should sit out this year. But ironically if he is healthy but not performing well, it could be a sign that he is doing the right thing. But its tough that he has to go through this in the Olympic year.
I have the distinct feeling that you guys are underestimating his physical ability.

Nah, you're probably right. Most likely it was all just a ploy.
If I had to bet, I'd say he doesn't make the olympic team, not with lagat, rupp and ritz trying to make the team as well. He won't do anything spectacular this year, but by next year he will probably be back into sub 13 shape, so long as he doesn't get injured again.
He isn't running a 10,000 and needs an "A" standard in the 5,000. He's done in 2012.
look at what happened to Adam Goucher, he was killin it until he hurt his back and it seemed like a never ending cycle of injuries for him afterwords. I hope he doesnt suffer the same kind of results. I'm rooting for his come back!
His physical ability was founded on training a lot and being injury free. Which is great except when you are not injury free. But I do think the one great advantage for CS is that he had established himself at a high level before the injury. I think once you have established that, and you are still young, you can recover from the injury and get back to that reasonably soon. But that means just getting back to that level, not building higher off that level. And while you are getting back to where you once were you have to suffer looking at the backs of your rivals.

And this is different from other runners how?
I don't know if he is finished.
It is a lot harder getting over the structural defect that is the root cause of the injury than just getting over the torn hammy itself.
A young body is able to compensate for a defect. As you get older and the Badger Miles pile up, you can no longer just power through it.
I wish him the best and hope that he can get back into peak form. He is a beast, and I enjoy watching him compete.
He said in that interview he's foregoing the 10,000 this year.
So, in the 5,000 you've got Lagat, Rupp (likely doubling like last year), a recovering Solinsky, Bumbalough. Teg? Derrick?
Will Teg do the 10,000 again?

Not at all. He's incredibly gifted, and it probably wouldn't take that long of a stretch of injury-free training to approach a semblance of his former self. But I think it's a huge risk if he's trying to bring it around to compete this year. Pretty sure that 10,000, where he re-injured his hamstring and dropped out, was either the Oregon Twilight meet or Pre, where Rupp warmed up but didn't run because the pollen count was at its highest in, of all places, Oregon.
Not a big difference. Except runners like Lagat and Rupp have been well known to keep volume relatively low and they have so far avoided big injuries. Otherwise, take your question up with Sprintgeezer. He brought it up.

I think the drag for him is that trials is so soon. IF he can get through that and somehow qualify, the time until London would be invaluable.
Of course, if he makes it to London he won't be a factor, but given his extraordinary level of fitness, it sounds to me like a rapid rahab is possible.
Why in the hell is Solinsky not running the 10k? 26:59 PR and he is running the 5k at the trials? WHY? Someone explain it to me.

Because he won't have time because of his injury to get his miles high enough to be competitive in the 10k.

Read that article. His training will not allow to put in the speed for a solid 5k. IMO he would be better suited for the 10k, he has no problems putting in miles, it's when he tries to up the pace that it goes wrong.
I am a huge Solinsky fan but after reading the article I have no faith that he ever does anything even remotely competetive in distance running again. Also, do these pros not pay attention? How many times have there been instances of athletes trying to push to the next level, upping mileage/intensity way too much and either getting hurt or burning out? A ton.
The 5000 is going to have Lagat and it'll have Rupp coming back from the 10,000, and the third spot could go to one of Solinsky's teammates. Late June doesn't sound early enough for him to be ready.
