An anonymous donor offered $300k to fund track and field for three years while alumni searched for a means of permanent funding. The school said no, despite asking this same guy to help send students to Europe.
Three of my XC and track coaches ran at Millersville, and spoke very highly of it. This is quite a shame.
Wow, that's one of the most confounding, assinine things I have ever read. The alumni come up with money, a plan, and support, and the university says thanks but hit the bricks.
My advice: corss out the "payee" lines on those checks and send them to: University of Maryland Men's Track and Firel and Cross Country Programs. We'll be happy to utilize your donations!
Seriously though, it's sad to see universities throw away these programs with real live student-athletes, in favor of the 6,000 person football team, coaching staff, training staff, tutoring staff, etc., which still loses money.
That is really disappointing to hear. It seems to me this about administration ego.... more than trying to support student opportunities.
The University cited Title IX issues and a lack of budget. So, they get an offer for a donation that provides temporary relief, and research shows that Title IX is not an issue. Their response is essentially ....well Title IX could be an issue, and we don't want to set a precedant for other creative solutions to problems. We don't want to be called out for our lack of thoughtful decision making.
It looks like they are digging in their heels. The real truth is they don't want to be told what to do, and they are not looking for solutions.
I say keep pushing the issue, and doing the research. Hold this administration/administrator accountable for this decision. The more they talk, the more clueless they look. Make them answer questions they are not prepared to answer. The reasoning is already unravelling.

It isn't news because $300k was offered. It is news because they said they needed $200k, $300k was offered, and now they say no deal.
Apparently something similar occurred at Seton Hall. When the decision is made it is made, and that's final, no matter how stupid of a decision it is.

I get that. It's just funny that such a sum of money is even a matter of discussion. The whole thing would have never come up at a real school. At a decent university, someone would have realized the shortfall, a few phone calls would have been made, and the $300k would have been raised before the need arose to eliminate the program. Heck, even Brown or Cornell wouldn't have to cut a program under similar circumstances.
They could have changed their minds and said yes. Dartmouth was going to eliminate swimming because their pool was antiquated. But alums ponied up and paid for a new one. The college didn't say "no." So they still have swimming.
Well la dee freaking da. Why don't we all just comit Harakiri since we have brought shame upon our families for not attending an Ivy League school.
yeah, we get it now, and finally with your help see the similarity between the PSAC and the Ivy. there is so much in common with their respective communities served, and the priorities of those emerging from each.

There's something very fishy about this entire Millersville issue. I don't believe the adminstration had any idea the runners would put up such a fight.
I hope they don't give up and I wish the Track/CC alumni would push even harder.

$300k's a substantial contribution at a school with an endowment the size of Millersville's ($16.7 million). It's nothing to a place with a 20 billion dollar (or more) endowment like Harvard.

You guys should know that when Princeton, dropped wrestling nearly a decade ago, alums raised roughly 2 million dollars to fund an endowment that would fun the program virtually forever...and guess what, Princeton did not and still has not brought back the wrestling program. Your IVY analogy does not work...sorry.
