Any sub 52.0? Whats the fastest?
Any sub 52.0? Whats the fastest?
Not quite sub-52, but a 52.64 last lap in a very erratically paced sub-3:30.
Splits:
Official El-Guerrouj
51.93 53.X
58.92 58-59
59.60 57-58
52.64 52.64
YiftertheShifter on Youtube comments that this is the fastest last lap for a sub 3:34 -
Nourreddine Morceli, 51.55 in a 3:32.85 to become world champion in 1991. Who could have touched him?!
his uncle perhaps

What happened with Cornelius Chirchir?
I think Filbert Bayi once went out in 51 and I think Jim Ryan closed in 51 several times.

Did they also run that race under 3:50. The qualification is important. I know quite hundreds of guys who could jog 1206 meters and then blast the final 400.
If memory serves me correctly, Steve Cram ran 53.2 on the last lap of the then world record 3:46 mile back in 1985.
The following stats page by Ken Nakamura has a list of fastest laps at the World Outdoor Champs:
http://trackandfieldnews.com/archive/wc09_statistics/m1500.pdf
The only sub 52.0 last lap in a 3:33 or faster race was Morceli's win in 1991 (3:32.84). Morceli's 50.6 (3:34) to win in 1993 is the fastest last lap in the World Champs.
The last three Olympics didn't have sub52.0/sub3:33 last laps, though 2008 was close.
Many thanks for that super informative list! Didn't know about the 50.6 in '93 for Morceli. Anyone know where I can find a video of that race?
I remember Yifter going 53 himself in the 10,000 meter race.
the 2004 olympic 1500 final final 400 was run in 51.95, but ElG only ran 3:34 that day.

With the last 800 run in 1:46!
I swear, I'm going senile. Not only did I know about it, but I also have a copy of the video and already did analysis on it. Can't keep a good thing to myself, so here it is:1993 WC 1500mhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-9VRMa91ew

That last lap was insane by morceli

What's even more insane is that the announcers still didn't think morceli had enough speed after that. Was there someone in that race capable of running 49??

A sub 52.0 last lap in a sub 3:33/3:50 is pretty unusual, but can be done if the penultimate lap (usually the slowest) drops a bit. Also depends on whether it's a championship final or a timed circuit run. The latter probably offering a slightly better chance of doing so.
Here are a few standout last 400m with their last 800m as well:-
Coe - LA Olympics 84 - 1:49.8, 53.2, 39.2, 25.7 - 3:32.53*
Aouita - Nice 1500 85 - 1:50.0, 52.9, 39.5, 26.1 - 3:29.71
Cram- Oslo Mile 85 - 1:51.2, 53.0, 38.7, 25.5 - 3:46.32
Morceli - World 1500 91 - 1:50.1, 51.6, 38.8, 26.0 - 3:32.85*
Ngeny - Sydney Olym 00 - 1:52.7, 54.1, 40.2, 26.5 - 3:32.1*
EL G - Brussels 1500 02 - 1:52.2, 52.5, 39.5, ____ - 3:29.95
Ramzi - Beijing Olym 08 - 1:51.3, 53.0, 39.0, 26.2 - 3:32.94*
