at the '97 monaco grand prix, kipketer went 52.0/50.8 for a 1:42.77... i remember watching it on tv-- absolutely amazing...
I am, of course, neither JTupper or Tinman. But nobody said "fast" 800m races couldn't be run with negative splits. I think they said that the best way to run it was with slightly positive splits.
Martin and Coe have a discussion on this in "Better Training For Distance Runners" I believe.

And this rule is where?
What are you really asking?
i think that wilkip is pointing out that most 800 races are run with the second half slower then the first.
it was a pretty simple question buxom blonde, even you with your arkansas educashun should be able to grasp it, just like you grasp your cousin's ________.

As has been pointed out, it has been done. Jim Ryun broke the world 880 yard record going out in 53+ and coming back in 51+. Probably one reason many of the faster races are positive split is because that's how the pace goes out and in an 800 you are taking a chance by staying back and assuming you wil run negative by yourself and still catch everyone. There is little time to make corrections in the 800, so you tend to race the whole way
Thanx JTupper!
I believe the 800 affords the least margin for error and this is why it is dangerous to go out off the pace. To be 2 seconds back at 400 seems like a lot at that point. You would have to be quite confident to be that far off the lead. Although, I guess Mark Everett has run a few. Then again, he usually bombed in major international meets. Of course, I guess the shorter the distance the less margin for error, so I apologize for maybe just stating the obvious.

WTF? He didn't run negative splits. You have the laps reversed.
