Who is America's best distance runner Lagat or Rupp ?

Desiree Davila will be the long term best distance runner. Or Maybe Shalane Flanagan, although she only has about 3 years to prove it.

lagat would win up to a half marathon, and lagat might even win at the marathon. and i think rupp can run a 2:05 marathon.

Aside from Lagat's suitcase full of Olympic and World Championship medals, his various American Records, and his head to head record against Rupp, I can't think of anything.

Much as I would like to see Rupp win a major medal on the world stage, I can't see rating him at Lagat's level currently.

The range thing is overrated. No one would suggest that Wardian has better range than Ryan Hall because of his 100 mile time.

There in no reason to believe that Lagat would not be very fast at 10k or a half if he trained for those distances.

Championship medals aside, Lagat is better because he has beaten Rupp every time they raced and his times for distances they have both run are much faster.

Geb has a 3:33 1500 PB, even though he hardly ever raced that distance. In other words, he was competitive at a world class level from 1500 to Marathon.

Now if Lagat would train for the Marathon, I am sure he has potential to go sub 2:10.

Lagat is clearly the best because he wins. Outside of NCAAs and US only races, Rupp has no international wins or medals. His AR in the 10k was a 4th place finish in a non-diamond league points event at Memorial Van Damme. At every international championship, Rupp was out of it in the stretch. By contrast, Lagat has piles of medals. He is always in it down the stretch. He owns Rupp at everything from 5k to 1500. Rupp's range is excellent, but you do not get a 4th place finish promoted to a bronze because you finished 4th in more than one event.

Agreed, Rupp can't be considered the best until he wins something or beats Lagat.

"someone had to do it"; just curious are you a Rupp fan? I seen you accuse A LOT of pro athletes of using epo but you haven't said anything about Rupp. Are you you suspicious of him as well? Is he in your 80 to 100 percentile of athletes who are using. If not, why? Please share.

Meb is more proven then Rupp, I'd say, but it is close.

Rupp has like I think zero wins outside the US. Lagat has too many to count. End of story.

I'm pretty sure the head to head racing record is:

Lagat lots of wins, Rupp none.

I dunno how you could argue for Rupp being better than Lagat when they have raced many times and Rupp, I believe, has never beaten him

Shalane is the hottest. Abdi will be remembered as the best.
