Lapped runners, Who says they get out of the way???

Maybe Haley wasen't going for a world best, but she had waited for this moment her whole life, in terms of the way the race was set up, doesn't everyone in the race have their own goals in mind, surley not the organisers fault. Knowing and racing with her, I am sure she will make the England team no doubt in mind. Figure if you were in your situation right now mate???

and i was watching the race from trackside and i dont think they were runnign 3 wide! the runners she lapped were still all serious athletes trying to race not some fun runners joggign around! if shes complaining about lapped runners not getting out of her way i hope she moves out for radcliffe if she does race at gateshead!

It's stupid to expect/demand of lapped people to move out of the lane 1. As it's usually the case the lappee is suffering more than the lapper.

Besides, none of us has eyes in the back.

I see no difference between passing the lapped runner and passig a runner on the same lap with me.

For instance, am being lapped and I move to lane 2. Now suppose two guys are duking it out around me. One sneeks by on the inside and the other must go around into lane 3.

Now, that's unfair.

I agree that it is easiest and most consistent if everyone passes on the outside. This is the approach I have always told our runners to take (if you are the lapper go around if you are the lappee stay in position) In our conference we have quite a wide disparity of abilities and two years ago I had an athlete en route to victory in the girls 2mile who was lapping another runner and that girl I think thought she was being honorable by going into lane 2 to let her pass on the inside. Unfortunately our runner didn't realize this and after some interesting acrobatic maneuvers she essentially dropped rolled and got back up to finish the race. The official on the turn ruled impedance on the lapped runner which I feel was a fair call but not one I would have protested had it not been made. (It didn't change the outcome of the race our athlete had a nearly 200m lead on second place (a teammate) at the time of the fall so she still won the race and the lapped runner was in 9th or 10th position at the time and we only score 6). At our invitationals I always now ask the officials and clerks to remind athletes that they should stay in their lane when being passed or lapped.

I was the anchor leg for an indoor 4x800 back in high school. The other team was handing off to the anchor as I was about to complete my first of four laps and lap this slower team. I moved into the second lane to completely avoid their handoff and give them room (lane two wouldn't have slowed me down much), but then BOTH of them moved into the second lane, so I darted back into lane one and then BOTH of them did as well, and as I tried to move around them in the second lane they collided with me or I with them and two of us (both the anchors) fell. It was a very awful way to run an indoor personal best. Lapped runners should ALWAYS stay in the first lane unless an official directs them to SAFELY move to the second lane, and then they should never move from that lane.
