How much would you pay for a 1 mile race?

eh, these days that sounds fine, especially if the course is pancake flat or slightly downhill.

I think your price is good. There's a local 1-mile race in my city that charges $20 for early registration, and they have "AG" awards, but the AG are kids or adults (they don't get enough runners to have smaller AG). It bugs me a bit because as a 37 year old, I don't stand a chance against the University students.

My only suggestion, if it's not too late, is not to give out t-shirts. Most people who do a race like that probably already own a billion tech shirts. Instead of a shirt, I got a pair of running sunglasses at a local 5k race; they had a different style for men/women, and I wear those sunglasses all the time. It's a WAY better race souvenir than a shirt. Good luck with your race!

For me to pay that much for a mile race it would have to be competitive stlye race. Maybe have different heats based on projected times or age groups. At the least, have a masters division and separate races for women.

And ditto on the t-shirts. I wouldn't want one for just a mile run unless it was a very big race. Skip the t-shirts and knock $5 off the entry price.

Their is no way I would spend 15 for a mile race. Ten dollars would be the most I would spend.

I wouldn't want another race day t-shirt, don't care that it's a tech shirt. I have too many t-shirts that I don't wear.

Keep the cash prizes for the overall, and do something unique for age group awards. Don't know how many tacky plaques and medals I have received and trashed over the years. Sunglasses, a good running hat, glass mugs/glasses...etc.

I would keep post race refreshments simple and low cost. If Panera is giving you a great deal go for it. In the race I helped to direct in the past all post race refreshments were donated.

As a race director I think that the most important aspects are to provide an accurate course, accurate and timely results, a unique experience/race and keep it at a reasonable price.

$5. $10 if provides free beer after.

This! I would love to see the people who think they can run 4:10-5:15 come threw way after everyone in there heats at 7/8 minutes.

I'd pay $15. At a minimum, you must have a Masters race, Women's race, and an Open race. Ditch the shirts, you should know that the only people that would consider running this race don't give a rats ass about shirts or medals or any of that BS. They will want an accurate course accurately timed.

I almost forgot. Based on recent threads, do not play the National Anthem at your race. Apparently a lot of runners hate this.

Instead, have the Chariots of Fire song playing, on repeat mode, over some loud speakers.

its on memorial day so we have to play the national anthem. In 09 we didn't and the race got some negative comments about it. but don't worry there will be a lot of Rush, Styx and Journey playin on the PA during pre and post race ceremonies.

i would pay 20-25 dollars. if you're going out of your way to put on a race, whether it be a 1 mile race or longer, it would be worth the price.

You should offer free admission to fast people (like with a PR of 4:30 or 16:00 for the 5k). There's a road race where I live that does something like that and they'll have 15+ people run under 4:30, plus some guys who were studs back in the day. I don't know how that is for depth where all you LRCers live, but in my neck of the woods that's unbelievable. It makes for a good time.

Fast people likely know fast people, so the previous comment about free admission with a qualifier might draw more people in.

Most i would pay is 15, try to get clocks at at least the halfway, if not every quarter mile.

Interesting idea, I'm not sure if anybody in the area could break 4:30, maybe a few high schoolers and college guys but given that case wouldn't a free entry plus prize money go against their regulations?

You mean regulations against high-schoolers and college guys accepting prize money? I don't think that would be a problem - most of them don't run road races due to their team obligations. Most likely won't be drawn to one with prize money, as they know they can't keep it. Besides, when you start talking about a little money you would be surprised at how many random 22-35 year olds can turn up and pop out a 4:1x-2x mile. Anyway, it's just a suggestion.

The Ithaca Festival mile gets a decent turnout and charges $12 for most divisions. I know it's not evenly divisible by 5, but it might give you some idea on how to organize the race(s). The T-shirt is optional/extra.
