Hi I'm just wondering how that goes. If an athlete verbally commits to a school, has gotten in the school and applied can the coach change his mind and turn the athlete away? This includes transfers as well. Cause I know an athlete can uncommit after verbally committing but I was wondering if a coach can as well.

I appreciate your help but you dont have to be a smartass about it. Im writing a paper on runners and the recruitment process for them so Im just wondering how the process is and Ivy's are different because no scholarship is involved.

Way out of my area of expertise but from what i can read it appears even signing papers doesn't guarantee the recruit anything. Haven't numerous football players been told there is not a scholarship available after signing a NLI? Isn't that the key to the oversigning controversy (see SEC football)? I know they limited oversigning but I'm still not sure if there are any guarantees.
yes the coach can withdraw the offer. I know someone that happened to a few years ago. She verbally committed, applied to the school, was accepted and everything. Right before signing date the coach told her he didn't have the scholarship money and she had to scramble to find another school. She got another scholarship at a different school but that episode made everyone at our school NOT want any of our recruits to look there again. This was NOT an IVY league school.
Contracts are for a single year at a time, but I believe that most coaches give their word that the scholarship level will not be decreased for the four years. However, I once saw a case in the newspaper where a school didn't renew scholarships for two senior basketball players. The only reason given was that the coach wanted to free up scholarships for incoming freshmen. I was appalled! Those seniors were from out of state, too. I think before signing that recruits should ask coaches their policy about years two through four.
