he ran the 3k at UW the day after a hard 5k with weaker competition and no rabbits you idiot.
He ran 3k with GREAT competition... OTC crew!
You discusst me.
I think he can run faster if he toned down the mileage and peaked.

What's there to discuss? He DID RUN 7:48 then 7:45. While I understand your argument regarding bigger indoor tracks I don't get the negative tone?
Why don't you try running 7:45 on ANY track indoor or out then talk.
"Why don't you try running 7:45 on ANY track indoor or out"
Given that the list of NCAA athletes who ran 7:45 or faster (indoor or out) is limited to Chapa, Cragg, Rono, Nyambui, Salazar, Rupp and Willis, I doubt that Saul posesses the ability to achieve such a feat.
That is a pretty select group. I would say that 99% of people on this board has heard of all these runners.
The incredible thing here however is that 6 months ago, 99% of people on this board had never even heard of Cam Levins even though he has been in the NCAA circuit for more than 4 years.

But 2 years ago he ran sub4 indoors.
In a typical year 20 to 30 NCAA athletes run a sub 4 mile. Not all 20 to 30 of them are or ever become "famous" in the running community. Chapa, Cragg, Rono...are famous names. Sub 4 mile is not equal to a 7:45 3,000m. Only a select few have ever achieved 7:45 or better while being in the NCAA (you can think of very famous runners who did not achieved that, such as Lagat, Kennedy, Sullivan, Teg, Ritz... It's pretty easy, all US runners except for Chapa, Salazar and Rupp. Who knows, he may end up being faster than some or all of them before his NCAA career is over.

Really? 7:39 is no. 4 on WSU's all time list and lagat is no. 6 at 7:45. Do times in Europe not count? Even though times against the pros in the US count like Chelangas 10k?

I completely agree. I'm just saying, 2 years ago he was 3:59, today perhaps he is 3:55 capable? It's not a shock really, ie he didn't just come out of nowhere before 2012. He won Canadian national XC twice. I think he wil continue the upswing and make london this year at 5000m.
Not 100% sure of what your point is. Are you saying that Saul therefore has a good chance of running sub 7:45 if he goes to Europe to run it?

In my mind, it's really coming from nowhere.
1 year ago, he had PBs of 3:59.8, 8:2x and 14:19 over the mile, 3,000 and 5,000 respectively.
Now he runs a 7:45 3,000m indoor.
For sure he had tremendous improvement over the last year. First with his world cross performance, then his 5,000 at outdoor NCAA, then his whole 2011 XC season. But really, very few had ever heard of him before the 2011 XC season began.
I will go out and say that I am 100% sure that no runner with current PB of 8:2x and 14:19 or slower who are currently NCAA athletes will run sub 7:46 next winter.
Actually, last year he ran 13:40 for 5k and an 8:05 3k in practice. But I agree with your basic premise here.
Does 7:45 equate with something near 13:20?

Alla Saul Azar Goodman is much better than you think.
IAAF ranking tables say 7:45.04 3k = 13:24.82 5
He ran 13:40 in June, which is less than 8 months ago. One year ago (12 months) he had not broken 14 yet. I believe that his PB was 14:19 at the time.

Is it the same Saul Goodman that ran 3:14 at the 1994 NYC marathon? My money is on him to break 7:46 for 3,000m in Europe this summer... He's got a good endurance base, so he should be good for it...
Better call Saul!

Maybe he hadn't broken 14 in an official race but I recall reading on one of the Canadian Nationals XC prediction threads (might have been on a different site) that he time-trialed a ~13:50 right before the 2010 XC championship race that he went on to win. Based on his sub-4 indoor mile in 2010 and his cross country performances at Nationals and Worlds in 2010-2011, I don't think that many Canadians are surprised by what Levins is doing this year. It's definitely nice to see that he's still continuing to progress though.
