Diego Estrada altitude converted 3.55.48

Nice run, but of all the conversions in track, altitiude are the sketchiest. Maybe for a sea-level athlete going up they are useful, but for an acclimated athlete, no.

If Diego lives and trains at altitude, this is an incorrect convertion.

If Diego was truely a 5K guy running a 3:55 mile is Jan would mean he is at perhaps at Ritz/Sol/Teg and Rupp's level. This was probably more like a 4 minute mile, which is still pretty good.

I agree on the sketchiness of the conversion.

Why is the NCAA so lenient on altitude, but a 4:00 mile equals like 3:38 1500m split. (dramatic hyperbole)

Agreed on some of the conversions, but a time like that is nothing to sniff at. Porter may have run a 4 flat mile in Alamosa once. How about those BYU guys back in the day at 5000ft?

You guys are hilarious. 4:04 at 7000ft, no matter who you are or how acclimated you are (or aren't), is a superb time that equates to no slower than 3:57. I was born and raised at altitude and have lived and trained at several different altitudes including both >6000ft and <1500ft, and I can tell you, 4:04 at 7000ft is ridiculous. Estrada is in fantastic shape right now. If he holds this fitness over the next few weeks I think we could see a 7:40-7:45 3k.

Diego Estrada is NOT from altitude, he's only lived in Flagstaff for this collegiate career. Being born and raised at altitude is different than moving there and training there for a few years.

Anything fast at 7000ft hurts.

I believe when Porter claims to have reeled off his 4-flat in Alamosa he said he saw God. Meaning, it took everything he had and then some. It should be noted that he was top elite at the time, no longer running for Adams St.

Despite running at Mt. Sac in a race that was won in 3:35 and despite running at Payton Jordan in a race that was won in 3:39, his best 1500 of the year was 3:41.34, a time that converts to 3:59 flat (using the 1.08 conversion).

No one has ever ran sub 4 on Colorado soil. There has been 1 sub 4 equivalent 1500- ran by Manzano

the conversion may seem generous (maybe particularly for the mile), but remember that Diego ran 14.21 for the 5000m here last year, which converted to a 13.42. Now, that may have seemed like a large conversion, but he went to NCAAs and ran 13.29, so it was likely pretty close.

its scary how many guys are coming out of the woodwork this year, the trials will be a different animal compared to 2008.

As someone who race at 7000+ a lot, that is a great performance. How it translates to a level track is another thing...but agree that it is at least a 3:56 or 3:57.

I mean, Ryun ran 3:37 for 1500 at 8,000 feet in Mexico City and I don't believe it makes sense to call that worth 3:28 when the best he ever ran was 3:33 at sea level.

But that 4:00 was a good four seconds faster at 10% higher elevation with almost 20% more altitude effect.

I agree. It's remarkable how goofy some of these altitude conversions get. Tim Noakes, in "Lore of Running," asserts that "Keino ran the equivalent of a 3:42 mile at sea level," which is ridiculous.
