You can greatly reduce the amount of tracking that happens if you run Firefox with the NoScript plugin. There may be similar options for other browsers. You'd be surprised at how much extra stuff is running in the background during a normal web session. LetsRun for example is also running scripts from intellitxt.com, googleadservices.com, and google-analytics.com. All three of which I have disabled with NoScript.

It's a private company. Nobody is forcing you to use their services. Decide as a consumer whether or not what they do is worth your privacy.

I never use google and it's blocked from my computer.

I've always found it funny that no one cares when private organizations that essentially have no restrictions on how they use your information collect all kinds of data on your life. But there are all kinds of absurd conspiracy theorists that think that the government is monitoring everything we do, despite the fact that there are all kind of restrictions on what the government can collect. Not to mention that private companies are beholden to no one but their shareholders.

If Google could throw people in prison and execute them then people would probably be more worried. As it is, what are they going to do, show me targeted advertisements?

LetsRun also allows scripts from tynt.com and skimresources.com. So that's a total of 4 demographics information gathering scripts recording information about your activity while on LetsRun. I would not say it's a conspiracy or anything but they're not exactly being up-front about it.

Thanks to Facebook, Google, etc. they can slap your picture in their face recognition database, and when the Drone sees you, it can take you out automatically! Those 75 other people next you as your are walking into a theater were just collateral damage, and probably were up to no good since they were by you!

There are restrictions on what government can collect, but not on what the government can purchase from a private entity like Google. Moreover, you seem to think that restrictions on the books means something, as if we were still operating under the rule of law, and the government hadn't openly declared it doesn't need to follow any of its own laws.

Things like this make me wonder in 25-30 years when most of the candidates for major public office are members of Generation Y who have used the internet almost their entire lives will there ever be a campaign cycle that goes by without a large number of scandals relating to candidates online activity whether it's related to something they posted on Facebook or Twitter or maybe something in their internet history. While this information is supposedly private, I'm sure it could be obtained with a little digging. The era of people actually having skeletons in their closet is over. Those skeletons are going to be out in the open for everyone to see.
