I doubt anyone loses their position at the swoosh. They just need to look at the future upside...
If Meb gets another medal then skechters dominates the running shoe industry then takes over the nba college sports ect ect then and only then would one of the good ol nike boyz get axed
That faux conversation made me laugh...well done..."marketing said that was the way to go. He doesn't have any tattoos." Hahahahaha!!!
So did the former Nike free designer really leave both Nike & Saucony & go to work for Sketchers as that one comment stated??? If so... Who is this guy?
yup somebody needs to be fired. anybody. doesn't matter who.
I'm not really defending NIKE, but Meb DNFed in about three marathons in a row a few years ago. I'm happy to see him running so well, especially for a smaller company.
Nike passed on Meb's contract demands in early 2011. It was a negotiation following the expiration of his previous contract and he asked for more than Nike was willing to pay. Meb shopped it around a bit and then came back to Nike but the offer had expired. Meb didn't sign with Skechers until August which tells you that, not only did Nike pass, but so did everyone else Meb talked to. Meb also couldn't work out a deal with the Boston Marathon and ended up having to take a pass until NYC. I was reading his book early last year in which he gave some insight into how Meb sees the need to maximize his financial future while he can. There's nothing wrong with that except that it comes with the same risks as any other business.
This was just a case of the free-market at work. Meb asked for a lot and Nike calculated the asking wasn't worth the risk and along came Skechers who saw a way to buy into the running market. I think he missed a bigger payday with Nike by holding out and only Skechers is the beneficiary. Not Meb.
If everyone would just go barefoot Nike could be stopped.

Well, since you are wrong, you get a minus 5, trollio.

OK. Please EXPLAIN why.
Thanks in advance for more of your outstanding insight.
From what I've heard, PDX Obeserver is correct. Nike passed on Meb, as did everyone else. For the money he allegedly wanted, no one was interested in a guy who had pretty much been branded as a Nike runner and was thought by many to be on the downside of his career. Skechers gave him less than Nike's offer, but it was the only offer on the table.
The only person who should lose his job is his agent/brother.
Actually, the guy in question is no longer with the Swoosh.
And to think Skechers got off with 1/4 of what Meb was worth while with Nike.. hopefully he had some great performance bonus clauses.
Pretty funny article.
I understand Nike made a business decision where they thought Meb was asking more than his worth.
But in the end, the cost would have been nothing to Nike compared to the exposure.
Skechers got a great deal and now Meb will benefit as their only athlete. It was a gamble and certainly provided him with motivation to do well at New York and Houston. He'll receive more exposure than any single Nike track and field athlete. Skechers stamped their imprint on running specialty last weekend.
nike has not done anything worth even talking about since the Tailwind....ohh and that was a disaster too, unless you enjoy chronic knee pain......i have not worn a nike shoe nor worn any nike clothes since i was 16 years old 25 years ago because they suck. i do not know anyone that actually trains in nike running shoes.
phil knight is the donald trump of running shoe company executives.

yes go barefoot. you must be a podiatrist in need of new patients. go barefoot if you like walking boots and crutches.
I understand that in the running world Meb is going to get a ton of exposure which will definitely help sketchers enter the running market...but in the grand scheme an athlete worth 250k to Nike is really nothing at all considering their stable of athletes. People are still going to buy Nike shoes and apparel.
