Ritz just dropped at the finish. Didn't have anymore left. Could Meb have run much faster than he did?

It's because he knew he was winning and Ritz knew he didn't make the team. That's how the body works.
Its more psychological than physical? Could Med have run faster if he wanted?

The winner is often the runner who had the easiest time. Racing is a survival of the fittest. If you're the last man standing, that means everyone else is dead. You being alive=least tired.
This isn't always the case, but it happens a lot in the marathon.
maybe because Meb was in better shape than Ritz?? Plus, Ritz always drops after races
I have to think Meb was pretty hungry for this win. He has a lot more riding than some of the others. He also sort of had something to prove to the BAA for snubbing him and NIke for dumping him in 2011.
Note too that Meb doesn't have the same resources as Hall or some others. He has three young girls to support and he's not exactly getting younger. This may be one of his last real shots for glory. Keep in mind the winner received $50,000 for the win. AND more than likely, he received some sort of bonus from Skechers for the win as well. In that respect the win was probably a bigger deal to Meb than most. Maybe that's why he worked so hard for it. Either way I'm happy for him. He takes some serious balls to win a race like that. He was surging, he went out hard and he wasn't afraid to challenge Hall.
I agree. Meb is one of the most likeable guys in the sport and I was really happy for him to run so well.
I hope he gets a couple of chances after the Olympics to get in a really flat and fast race and put up something in the 2:06-2:07 range which he is capable of.

I think he's only capable of 2:08 tops. He's just an incredible racer that's all.
Meb is also a bigtime marathon veteran. He knows how the race is supposed to feel, and he has the experience to mete out his effort properly.

Meb's run under 2:10 eight times (I think) and has never run under 2:09. His half marathon best time is 61:00. McMillan puts the marathon equivalent at 2:08:39.
Calculating another way, 61:00 is the 652nd fastest time ever run. The 652nd fastest marathon time ever run is 2:08:42 (that's pretty darned close! I'm impressed!)
I don't see any reason to believe he's capable of a 2:06-2:07.
Maybe because of his cap?
