I bet it's difficult to have runners come to Michigan. I mean, if you have to move for running, wouldn't you want to move somewhere where training conditions are ideal? That means altitude, weather, etc...

Either way we need more teams like these to support our best runners.

I do agree that it would be tough to train in Michigan. I grew up running in cold weather. Hard to do speedwork when it's 0 degrees and snow on the ground.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the top 3 men all self-coached? None of them are even part of a training group.

meb is coached by bob larson. he has a core group including dan browne and brian ball and mammoth as a larger group

Did you really think any of the current men had a legitimate chance? Come on now. Polley, Morgan, Sage. They don't have the talent, pure and simple.

All that matters is putting your athlete in the top three. Theres no reward for having your runners place 4,5,6.

So the Hansons have now produced two Olympians in Sell and Davila. How many other olympians have these programs produced?

Not only that they have produced Olympians whom were mediocre runners before they got to their program.

They might not have the most talented runners but they are producing Olympians and thats the goal!

I don't think you get what their program is about... They don't take the top stud runners fresh out of college... They take decent runners that show potential, but are not fast enough to be offered individual sponsors/contracts... The runners they go after show strong will to work hard and go after their big running goals, even if that means putting off making 'real' money for a few, or many, years in their 20's.

If they were able to recruit the same runners that sign individually with Nike, Asics, New Balance, Adidas, etc... then of course they'd produce more olympians...

But look at the colleges their runners come from, look at their runners college credentials... none of them are overwhelmingly significant or special... But nevertheless, through dedication and hard work, they've produced 2 marathon olympians through their program...

I'd say they've been pretty successful so far!

So they had a down Olympic trials on the men's for the first time. They had men go 4 and 5 in 2004 and Brian finished 3rd in 2008--pretty good! Now they had a female finish 2nd... They'll be back again on the men's side...

Please wake up. As I said before, 4th and 5th was a WEAK year, look at Clint's time and give me a break.

You all thought Morgan would pop one because his coach said he's ready for a 2:11, and you were all wrong. Many of you said I was wrong and that Luke was going for top 3, please!!!!!!! Now you say nothing AFTER the fact. Luke, Sage, Morgan, never had a chance. The halfway split was close to Morgan's pr and many of you thought he was going to make it.

Sage will run for 4 more years and get nowhere because he DOESN'T HAVE THE TALENT/ABILITY. Morgan and Luke are as good as gone.

I train in Michigan and I don't see the problem. Funny thing, neither did Brian. Dathan trained for his high school years here. So then, it's not the environment, it's the lack of talent/ability. You guys, like usual, are over-thinking the obvious and trying to act like you've got the answer to end all answers. See sentence 3 above and it spells it out.

Which group beat Hansons across 5?

If they didn't have 5 finishers then they are not trying to do things the Hansons way.

Take several runners that everyone else looked past and train as a group and hopefully by adding depth to the field it will make EVERYONE better and maybe even produce an Olympian from the group every now and then.

It seems to me like Americans have never been faster and that the Hansons have had a couple of Olympians. Huge success for the Hansons on achieving both of their goals.
