Hypothetical question, but does any part of a major marathon (NYC, Boston, Chicago, Oly Trials) go through an area where the Occupy Wall Street crowd could effectively demonstrate and block the marathon runners from coming through? I was reading the "employ rent-a-cops for the NYC marathon" thread and thought, "the streets and sidewalks and central park are all public areas, what stops OWS from demonstrating on the course path?".
In that case, I think it would be perfectly appropriate to lower your shoulder and drive it hard into the most unsuspecting path-blockers jaw, leaving it limp and broken. Continue on your marathon.
or insane catholic priests for that matter (since there is precedence for that actually occurring)

A City-issued document called "Permit to Use Right of Way". NYRR will possess one, OWS will not.
I don't know if you've noticed, but the roads are actually closed to the public during the race. The OWS protestors would be no more free to enter the course than anyone else would be. I suppose that they could slip onto the course, but they'd be removed pretty quickly.
NYC happened this year around the appropriate time. The protest location was a few miles away, so no impediment.
Although runners get a bad rap for being weak, I think we have the OWS crowd beat.

i was actualy worried this would happen when i was running the philly marathon. we ran very close to the demonstartion anti capatalist ignorant hippie camp but they didnt bother the race. maybe they saw a pair of home made five fingers and decided we were an OK group

The Hartford 1/2 passed right by the Occupy Hartford camp this year around mile 12. They were pretty chill, held their signs and stuff but never got in the way, some even handed out bottles of water to the runners although most passed since they were so close to finishing + were probably sketched out by getting water from them. Nice gesture though.

Before the Portland Marathon OWS took over the downtown park where the start/finish is staged. City leaders, marathon organizers, police and OWS reps worked everything out and by race morning the park was cleared out. The day before the race there was even a sheet hanging in the OWS camp spray painted, "Occupy Portland Supports the Portland Marathon."
Ironically, before the race start, Jeff Galloway or Frank Shorter was giving a pep talk over a loud speaker, telling the runners how proud they should be to be marathoners because 99 percent of the world couldn't cover the distance. "Oh my god," I shouted, "we're part of the one percent!"

Wait until the 40%-80% crowd (you know, the middle class)
have all of their wealth taken away by the upper 20% and mostly the upper 2%. When that happens over the next 30 years the revolt will happen and it will get pretty messy for those that financially abused the general population.
