He's qualified for the marathon trials by virtue of his 1:02:39 half at the 2010 Rock N Roll Las Vegas Half. Has he been injured ? Why would he not take a shot at making the marathon team ?

Not every freaking person who is qualified for the marathon trials should run it. Guy qualified for our 10k world championship team last year, no reason to think he shouldn't be expecting and gearing up to make the Olympic team in the same event.
Maybe he's a realist and knows he has zero chance of making the team, and the half matches up better with his 2012 plans and goals. Or maybe he wants to meet tRg at the race on Sunday.
he's 4 years away from marathon mastery.
Maybe his contract will be up soon? 61:xx is a good time, and Scotty's shown great potential over the 12k-half distance (much like Ritz), while struggling outside that a bit since college.

I guess that is correct if you consider struggling to be making the World Championship team for 10000m.
There is $10,000 for first in the half and probably not a lot of money going to pay E. Africans to show up. If he isn't a contender for the trials, why wouldn't he try to make some money and get in shape for the 10k trials instead.
Just maybe Scotty has a coach that realizes how ridiculous it is to try to debut at the trials. Plenty of stupidity out there.
Not running the trials is why he's a 2nd tier runner.

I don't understand why people have to write stuff like this. What pleasure do you get out of saying that he's a second tier runner? He ran in the world championships. How many times do you need to be reminded?
Honestly that 10k is by far his best race since being a pro and you know that. Considering how quick he was coming out of Chico I'd say it's fairly safe to say there was a disappointing transitioning period in there for him.
A show hands to dismiss J.R. from the locker room.

Guess Lagat is 2nd tier too, huh? He won't be running, hell he's so second tier he isn't even qualified!
@scottybauhs twitter: @letsrundotcom I decided after a long/tiring season last year to focus solely on the 10k and get ready for another long/tiring season.

As far as I know, Lagat is not qualified to run in the marathon trials.
I know, I said that. That must make him even more of a second tier runner then, right? Not even able to qualify.
Or are you stupid enough to think that every single person who has qualified for our Olympic Trials in the marathon, even knowing that this country accepts 10000m and HM as qualifying marks, should run the race? If so there is no hope for you.
I didn't say he should run the marathon trials.
What he does is his business.
Solinski and Tegencamp are qualified for the Trials. Are they second tier?

If you want to call Scott second tier because the first tier = those winning or very close to winning olympic/world champs medals and second tier = those making or very close to making world/olympic teams but not close to medaling then that is fair.
But you said "Not running the trials is why he's a 2nd tier runner" which makes absolutely no sense. As though running the trials and getting 7th or 8th would make him 1st tier but not running the trials and making the olympic team in the 10k relegates him to 2nd tier.
Although I'm somewhat curious about what the hell you mean, I feel as though you have dug yourself quite a hole and should probably never come back to this thread.

You said by him not running the trials he is a second tier runner. WTF do you mean by that other than to suggest he should be running the race?
You have proven yourself to be a gigantic moron.
