Including runners and nonrunners for a male age 30?
There may not be many Generals who are 30 years old, but of the ones that are, I'd guess that they stay in decent shape, and therefore your answer is 7:49.
Actually I meant just an average cross section of society, not just runners. Sorry for the confusion.
probably like 10 minutes average.
I'd guess the average 30 year old american male could run an 8:40, but would be laid up for a day or two after doing so.
About 97 percent of the males age 30 will never even run a mile

Cool. I don't feel as bad about not being as fast as I used to be now.
I think the median would be around 8:00 assuming decent pacing.
It is only a mile, anybody with any endurance that isn't way fat could probably gut out a 7:00. There are a lot of fatties, so I'll go with 8:00
Depends on what you mean by fat. If the person is say 30 pounds over ideal weight, and the 2 seconds pppm is remotely true, then that's saying the average lean male could guy out a 6:00.
Maybe, but I doubt it.
I'd personally guess 8-8:30 given that the average person is a good 30-50 pounds overweight. I think most people could gut out something in the high 6's low 7's if they were at an "ideal" racing weight.
I'd guess 9:xx range in the US. That's about what a skinnyish but not in shape person can do. Lots of fat people around 15, and a good number of decently athletic / somewhat active people under 7.

This is true. If the average sedentary lifestyle man were forced to run a mile it would take at least 10 minutes. No chance of sub 7 for most
The median would be 8:30 for a fit 30yr old male, overall population would be 15 minutes+ with a lot of DNFs
My neighbor ran a 3:36 mile.
There are some really stupid answers on here.
I am in good shape, can run a 21 minute 5k, and run 30+ miles a week. I could make myself vomit and run a 6 minute mile. To say that the average 30 year old (which means fat and not a runner) could "gut out" a high 6/low 7 is just dumb. I know this is LetsRun where everybody is a 4:05 miler, but come the freak on.
Average running 30 year old maybe 6:30 minutes (10% of population)
Average athletic but not running 30 year old maybe 7:30 (20% of the the population)
Average 30 year old maybe 9:00 (60% of population)
Really fat 30 year old maybe 12++ (10% of population)
8:00-8:30 would be my guess for those who are regularly active - we are talking playing tennis on the weekends, pick up basketball once a week, ultimate frisbee with their girlfriends.
I'd say 50% of 30-year old American males couldn't finish a mile. Take a stroll through your Facebook friends and tell me how many of them could actually run for more than 10 minutes.
The average mile time for 30 year old males is "DNS".

I mean if they were forced to run a mile. I was feeling bad, but then considered that I'm still probably a lot faster than the average person in America.
I was running with my wife at an indoor track one evening when about twenty army reservists showed up to do a time trial of about 1.5 miles. My wife, who is 50, was running 5 miles at about a 9:15 mile pace. I was running longer at around 8:00 pace.
There was only one guy who ever passed me (eight laps per mile), two that passed my wife, and we lapped all others, many multiple times. Some got cramps and were limping by the end. I'd say ages were from 25 to about 40. One guy who had one lap left decided to stay ahead of me the rest of the 200 m, but he only could manage about 120 m before he had to ease up and let me go by at my blistering 8:00 pace.
I'm guessing the average mile time for an untrained 30 yr old - would be no better than 10:00- possibly 11:00. This was a small sample size, but It taught me that most of those who never train to run truly suck at running.
I think I read some study a long time ago that had almost every guy at some community college run a mile, it was over 400 random guys. The averaged out time was like 12 minutes. A few really fast times, but just as many clunkers who took off died after 300 yards and had to walk/shuffle in.
Anyone thinking its under 10:00 is crazy. Getting a real average would be impossible because as much as 20-25% wouldn't finish.
Most 30 year olds have already let their fitness go. On top of that, so many are mentally weak and scared of a little pain. A lot of men who are physically capable of finishing would give up, thinking they couldn't make it.
