I'm planning on running JFK next year and so I've been looking around online for some ideas of how to train for this thing. I've been pretty disappointed though. It seems like everything out there is geared towards "completing" and not actually racing. Literally every plan I found included heavy amounts of walking breaks and some even suggested walking on race day. I'm hoping someone on here has actually taken one of these seriously like you would a marathon or under race.
So some relevant background in case someone wants to help me out. I'm 20 years old, male, 6 feet tall, 140 pounds. Mile PR-4:35(HS),2 Mile-9:42(HS),5k-15:37(this past summer). This year was pretty much the first time I was in good shape since high school. I've been running consistently between 75-100 miles per week,I try not to get too hung up on the numbers though. I run doubles 3 times a week but I'm open to any configuration of mileage really. I took a few weeks off after that 5k but I'm back in very good shape right now(at least for me). I've done races longer than 5k before but not to where I was really focused and in shape so I'm not going to bother with those times. I also did a 50k in high school just for shits and giggles.
As I understand it, I need to run something like a sub 3 hour marathon to get into the first round of entries for JFK so that's kind of my immediate race goal but I don't know if I should train specifically marathon style for that or if it should be just another checkpoint in my 50k training. Either way I have quite a while to prepare for this thing so I'm not in a huge rush but I definitely want to be ready to actually compete and see how high I can place.
So, can any of you guys help me out?
