Merry Christmas all!
I am just starting a longish build up to do an ironman and have decided to use Hadd's guide as the basis for my run training. So, today I went out and did the 2400m test with the following results:
140bpm 8:40/mile
150bpm 8:23/mile
160bpm 8:23/mile
170bpm 8:23/mile
180bpm 8:01/mile
My HRmax is ~194, my LT is ~174 and I guess my AeT is around 140ish.
To further confuse matters, I am capable of running 5 x 1000m with 2 mins between each (I now know it should only have been 1..) at 3:42, 3:41, 3:40, 3:45. 3:36 giving a pretty fast 1 mile pace. I did not wear my HRM when doing these so no idea how high my HR went, but the conditions were similar.
My recent training has been for 7-a-side rugby at a decent level, which for the uninitiated is mostly operating anaerobically for up to 7 mins at a time, so I know that I have very good sport specific fitness for that and am pretty rapid over short distances.
I do not understand why my times on the Hadd test
a) are extremely slow (esp when compared to my 1k splits)
b) are flat in the middle HR ranges
c) have so little range
My assumptions are that my mileage has been too low (~20m/w) of late so fatigue was a factor (although the 180bpm set shows that I wasn't totally out on my feet). This will improve but I'll never reach 50m/w due to time on bike/swim training - does Hadd method still work on 20-30m/w, building to 40 odd eventually?
Clearly I am poorly trained aerobically; that is an inescapable conclusion.
I should also add that the test was done in 31C and 65% humidity (the norm over here in Singapore), but that I am fully acclimatised to it (LT was measured on a run in similar conditions a couple of weeks ago).
In summary:
1) Should I retest my HRmax or LT?
2) Where do I go from here?!
My current intention is to do 20-40m/w without going much over 155 bpm and mostly around 135-145 and doing sessions of minimum an hour as much as possible.
3) What results would you expect me to achieve on a Hadd test in 12 weeks time on 20-30m/w? I have no idea how to interpret my results or how they might progress.
4) What pace do you think I could sustain for a marathon after:
12 weeks training, racing at 140bpm?
24 weeks training, racing at 140bpm?
Same questions but racing at 170bpm?
5) What is the best estimate of my one mile pace?
I appreciate that this is a massive first post with a lot of questions, but am a bit confused by these results and have no idea what they mean or what my potential might be, making it difficult to choose training partners that I can stick with for the long term or manage my expectations!
I have a had a good read of the forum but have not been able to find anyone posting results similar to my own...
Many thanks in advance for any answers/suggestions!
Rob
