So I am really old now and trying to start running again for the nth time. This is my third week of training in this new start. I ran for about a month last year around the same time before getting bored with it. I have this 5.9 and 6.8 mile routes that I mapped around the neighborhood of 60/40 of sidewalks/asphalt. When I finish the run, I am somewhat tired. Not all out tired but kind of tired. Muscles feel sore. I could run more or more often but just don't have the motivation to do it.
So about 6th or maybe 7th runs ago, I decide to change the routine and run around the park's soft surfaces. I can cover 99% of the run in mostly somewhat cleared grass path and dirts. Strangely and oddly, my body feels so fresh after each of these runs. The loop is about .84 miles and I cover 9 loops. I tried to take it easy on the first 2 loops as it seems my old body takes time to warm up. That is in addition to 1/2 mile warming up I do to get to the park.
So today, after the 9th loop. I thought I could easily go another 3 loops at a good clip. But I thought finish feeling fresh.
Has anyone encountered this kind of experience switching to running on soft surfaces? I am in NY and there isn't any viable trails for me so doing bulk of the runs/mileage on soft surfaces was not possible. When I was in college, we ran cross country workouts around soccer fields but all our mileages were done on the road.
I remember thinking few days ago had I known this when I was younger, I could have really rock and rolled. I was also thinking this is how Kenyans run 150 miles per week. No way they can run much on paved roads. Or could this be at my age, i am benefiting more from running on soft surfaces?
