I believe Bill Rodgers (Wesleyan) took a few years off to drink and smoke before a 2:28 first marathon finish and CR in the Bay State Marathon. He had some other nice races after that too.

nope, if you read he logs he said one day he stopped and smoked some ones cigarette, was disgusted with it and himself, and said "never again"
5:28 is closer to what I am thinking. I think he goes between 5:20 and 5:03
Bill's smoking is part of his legend, and as far as I can tell, he really did smoke for a while there. Here's a story that mentions it - http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20070638,00.htmlI'll pull out the important part:"He avoids tobacco, although he was a pack-a-day smoker until five or six years ago."

Does he stay in shape with exercise other than running? Has he gained much weight? How much does he smoke?
Not much exercise as far as I can tell. Occasionally he goes out for a 2 mile run but that's it. He hasn't put on an ounce either.
OK. I'll go with 5:40.
I'd say 5:20 but it's gonna be ugly, like 70, 80, 90, 80

Yes, I see that happening as well, he ran an 800 time trial after about a month off and it went similarly, I just dug through his facebook wall and found this...
4 months give or take off from running.. 2:11 800. 29, 31, 33, 38. get at me average female runners of the world

Thanks for the link Flagpole. Interesting to read an article from 1978.
Words like "retarded" just aren't found in magazine articles these days.

If he's a serious smoker, pack a day or more, and hasn't run a step in 12 months, I can't see him going faster than 6:30. If he's remained at a decent weight and remained active and just smokes casually, I'd think he could go maybe go 5:45. Maybe.
