does he have any cross eligibility?
I will miss watching him at BU this winter.
I agree with the article about training partners at OU (no disrespect to the current Black Bears). Also, for anyone that has never been to Orono, it is a tough place to train and have quality training given the weather and indoor track. Best of luck to him as he could take it up a level.
hard and possibly unwise to leave a place that got him an 18 second drop in the mile to date and a 7:53 3k which projects out to a very substantial drop below 14 in the 5k, but there's no doubt that there's a longer outdoor training season in oklahoma (though lots of extremes in weather there) and much better competition in practice and meets.
When you are a 3:57 type, you cant train with 4:10 guys

Hmm. What sub 4:10 guys were on Alan Webb's HS team?
Nate Brannen was a sub 4 high school miler in the same class as Webb.
Nate Brannen didn't go to South Lakes HS.
Richard smith ran 3:03.x for 1200 indoor for a dmr with Webb, I'd guess that is close to sub 410. He ran 63.x (500) and 1:48.x in 02. So yeah he was pretty good
Is there any way there isn't tampering here?
How does an athlete decide to transfer midyear like this. I guess it is cool that the Maine coach is releasing him, but I would understand completely if he didn't.
Maybe he just couldn't face another winter training in Maine. Plus it's an Olympic year; I'd imagine that played some role in his decision.
There was a reference on some thread that while he was a senior academically, he was a junior athletically. Not sure what seasons he has left.
Good for him. He competed well and hard for U Maine while he was there- a credit to both the school and the state.
He obviously has some athletic ambitions and to a previous poster, Orono in the winter is not the easiest place to train. While Stillwater isn't Miami, its still a more temperate climate.
Where do I know Martin Smith's name from? (other than OU)
This must be the year of deserting your teams. Right decision for Masters, don't get me wrong, but wow there have been a lot of moves and leaving of teams in various ways.

Oregon and Wisconsin, I think.
From the Flotrack article on the transfer-- not sure how I missed it. Good for him!!!
"Riley has one indoor season, two outdoor seasons and potentially one cross country season left in the NCAA."
OU is in Norman not Stillwater.Martin Smith of Wizco fame and prior to that UVA....Was Jim Hill's HS coach as well.

Will he be able to use all of those?
He has been at UMe for 3.5 years. Is he eligible to compete this winter/spring? Does he have to sit out?
He is good to start competing for the university in January as from what I understand UM's coach has released him. Won't have to sit out and will keep all eligibility (Indoor, 2 Outdoors and Cross)
BOOM!
He does not have to sit out, he was released without hesitation. They are on good terms.
