A credible NJ reporter who followed both Christian Brothers and Edward from the beginning of the season until now states in his write-up of the meet that Cheserek RAN HIS LAST 800 IN 1:54?!
Can anyone verify this?

`I was very confident the whole race that I could win at the end because my speed was my advantage,'' Cheserek, who ran the final 800 meters in 1:54, said. ``When I started to kick with 200 meters to go I knew I could stay in front of him. It was a great race and I am happy to beat a great runner like Futsum.''

Complete BS.
They ran the first two miles (Roughly 3218 meters) in 9:50
If they ran the final 800 meters in 1:54, that would mean they ran the other 982 meters in about 3:07.5, which would be 5:29/mile pace.
Again, complete BS. -
"Next year I will try for the record here and maybe I can get it"
Yep, and after that we'll have HS records of 1:45, 3:49, 8:20, 13:30, and 28:00 -
It can't be possible that they slowed up that much after the 2 mile. Half the field would have caught them with 800 to go. I didn't see anybody else close.
-
Forget him breaking the 10k record; not because he's incapable, it's just that he will never race that distance in HS.
-
3:07 for 982 metres is about 3:10 for 1km, or about 5:05ish pace.
-
It would also include the uphill part of the course. No way they were sub 5 pace up the hill?
-
Yeah, like 5:08mid. Not at all impossible. Not sure where that 5:30 figure came from...
I would say it's pretty likely the reporter was exaggerating though. Sub-2:00, yeah of course. 1:54? Not if they didn't really start kicking until 200. -
Yeah you did the math wrong. If they did 1:54 the last 800, then the previous 800 was about 2:33, which is totally reasonable.
On the other hand I don't know if the course is marked "800m left" at any point, and who knows if that'd be accurate anyway. Still, they must've closed very fast. -

Holy crap. I forgot he's a junior in high school.
I think a lot of people are realizing now that there are in essence two types of US high school records. Records by an American high schooler and records by anyone at an American high school.
How old is he? Sorry for the laziness of not looking it up. -
Considering Futsum's 800 PR is a 1:56 (although that was his sophomore year) I'm gonna go ahead and call it BS.
-
He is supposed to be 17, according to his DOB. Could be +- a year or so but seems fairly accurate based on his progression and low mileage.
I don't know why people are so upset about this - we get to see guys who'll probably go on to win Olympic medals while they're still in high school. In my mind this is much more exciting then watching some random dude win and then drop out of college or disappear for years on end (see: Hall, Futsum). What's more, it's a High school championship, not US Juniors. -
1:54? What a crock of ____! Watch the race again. They ran pretty fast at the end but nothing phenomenal. I seriously doubt it was under 2:10.
-
Lambert on Tracktalk.net:
Splits they announced at 2 miles were wrong.
They were at 9:45, not 9:50.
So last 1.1 was 5:07
12:58 with a half mile to go. so 1:54 last half. Amazing!!
went out conservative-4:52 frist mile, which is why that times weren't as fast as many thought!
Best year ever for NJ boys XC!!!
Again, I don't know how he knew there was 800m left. But he does seem to think the last half was 1:54. -
As Fitz put it on tracktalk:
Any reports saying they closed the last 800 in 1:54 are bogus. Since when is the 800 to go mark marked on a XC course? And they would have gapped the field by at least 25 seconds (which would mean the third place guy finishing with a 2:19 half, which is generous), when the next finisher was 28 seconds behind Futsum. So at 2.6 the pack was within 5 seconds of Futsum/Cheserek? riiiiiight. Great race still, but don't exaggerate to make it seem better than it was. -
it could be true - the last half mile is so much down hill so its a lot of help there
-
Yeah, they were both pretty gassed at the end after strong moves on the uphill. I would guess from watching it, around 2:16 for Cheserek, being generous.
Also, no way they hit 2 miles in 9:50, does anyone have the real split? -
you're right, I should've said than #drunk #d3girlsdrinkinghard

And all of my posts about the Brojos and mods being white supremacists get deleted. -

Well, you are well named, Fool. It is an interesting characteristic of the weak minded of the human race that they need to exaggerate everything they see rather than respect truth.
Nice race. But the last half was not even remotely close to 1:54. Seriously, do you even know what a 1:54 half looks like? I mean, do you even run at all?
