What a shame. They paid for surgery to help him lose weight, but now he has to beg to get the excess skin removed. To sum the article up (there are pics in the article), the NHS says he must maintain his now stable weight consistently before they consider the surgery. I wont be surprised if having to look like that triggers another bing-eating depression...

i think that for obesity at that level, there is more involved than lack of self control. it is probably a genetic component. there is a real disorder that involves non-stop hunger, and one that mkaes a person feel thirsty all the time, despite adequate food and drink.
the body is a complex physical and MENTAL marvel.
Why shouldn't the taxpayers pay for this?

This is completely standard for people who have lost a lot of weight. Are you up in arms that they aren't making an exception for him?
Also, this reminds me of one of my favorite (absurdly sexist) jokes:
Q: What do you call the excess skin around the vagina?
A: The woman!
I'm not a doctor, but how hard could removing excess skin be? It seems like something a street doctor can do to you for the right amount of money.
I guess there's a lot of blood loss to manage, and that its not just dead weight skin.
Actually, I'd rather not get that big in the first place, since the cut-and-rejoin marks from tightening the remaining skin back up would be unsightly. But surgery is so advanced now that most surgical procedures dont leave any scars, right?
