No sub 18 minutes for him.
No sub 18 minutes for him.
19:30?!?!
That's like me running a 5K in 47:12.
Truth. Search for "Stember" here: http://results.bazumedia.com/event/results/event/hungry2011. Then select "Michael S" from among the search results.
That's slower than I would have imagined. What does he look like now, is he bloated up, like a hog? I know he has a desk job, but that's slower than my marathon pace, and I'm 44, and not a marathoner.
What....the...f----
Where is that doofus now who was going on like Stember is Buffet, Bekele, and Mother Theresa combined?
Makes me laugh at the people expecting a 16:xx time for him. Even I was too optimistic at 18:30-19.
That is a surprise. It leads me to believe he doesn't enjoy running at all. That is sad.
maybe he was running with a friend

Not true. I doubt he would've run as fast as he once did if he didn't enjoy the training and racing somewhat. I think posters on these boards who have never been slow or out of shape realize how hard it is to get into shape when you're way out of shape or have never been in shape.
He was just training through it.
In a Turkey Trot this AM, a friend who 5 years ago was a 15:00 5k guy and is now 30-40lb overweight and barely running managed a sub 18. If running 4-5 days per week, 30min plus, I would expect at sub 18min 5k with Stember's talent level. Maybe he just did not run at all.
I'm sorry, but it seems a little pathetic. He's still relatively young and healthy. You think with as much talent as he has that he'd be able to at least crack 19 minutes. He can't gut out a time faster than an above average high school girl? Especially given that he was doing some preparation to beat a goal for charity...
Not trying to flame, just blows my mind.
Every single year, literally hundreds of high school freshman girls run that time with almost no running background.
With that in mind, I'd call it a rather lousy performance for a former Olympian.
I ran the 10k at the Run to Feed the Hungry this morning. I didn't see Stember finish, but conditions were actually pretty nice. A bit of rain, but temperatures were around 50 degrees with no wind. Maybe not PR conditions, but the weather wouldn't have hindered him. That 5k course is dead flat too, so it's not like there are any hills to slow him down.
If he had come into the race with zero miles under his belt, then I might expect 19:30. But to actually train, and even do a few workouts, and still barely get under 20 minutes, that's pretty sad. I guess it goes to show how much you lose when you're not exercising.
I honestly thought he was sandbagging when he set the time at 18:00. I was thinking he made the standard intentionally easy so that the school would definitely get the money.
Was he dribbling a basketball the whole 5k?
I created my training plan for people like Stember. Too many athletes let the years go by and can't run anywhere close to what they used to be able to do. Stember's story is common. What worked in high school doesn't work anymore for people like him. You gotta train like a novice for a few years to get back to your high school times.
He looked totally out of shape. No excuse. On a side note, he can still dunk a basketball.
I heard he's thinking about going out for the 2012 Olympic soccer team.
word is the race was "tactical", hence the slow time. heard his last 600 was totes crazy!
