On the NCAA cross country video, it was mentioned that Chris Derrick became the 6th runner to finish in the top 10 at nationals all 4 years. Who are the other five. I know Prefontaine for sure and I am pretty sure Kennedy and Goucher did. Not sure about Lindgren. Does anyone know if there really has only been six guys to do this and who they are?

Thanks Dingler. Could have probably researched more myself. They could have been wrong on the broadcast that Derrick was the 6th to do so, but hopefully someone knows if there was another one and who it was. If that person didn't do it without red-shirting then Derrick would be the first to do so.
I went to watch the race in Madison where Rono was almost last. It was very cold and a little snow on the ground. We went down to see Rono run and of course we were unhappy to see him finish so far back and then have some guy we had never heard of in long black socks win it. Salazar went on to have a pretty good career after that.

What were Kevin Sullivan's finishes? I recall he was in the top 5 from the start.
Placing top 10 at 4 NCAA Cross champs is a remarkeable achievement. You have an off day or season (just a little off) and that's why we used to love to look at the results and find the biggest names that finished in 70 to 100 place.
Very rare. Great great runners have had bad days and finsished over 100th place.

I can't find any others that haven't been mentioned. Might be a couple on the women's side that they included in the six mentioned. But I would think that a few more women have 4 top 10 finishes.
Chelenga was close too (16th, redshirt, 2nd, 1st, 1st). Bairu (38th, 9rd, 1st, 1st) was about as close as Puskedra and Rono. Still can't figure out the fifth.

Nice work Dingler and McGato. Four of the six won it more than once and Pre had the most with three. Kennedy had a nice long stretch between his two firsts, as a freshman and a fifth year senior. I got to see both of his wins.
I would guess that there are more women that have done this than the men, but maybe not. Not sure if anyone wants to tackle that. I am pretty sure Suzy Favor was top ten all four years.

The stats are all readily available but its a fun game to go blind on this. Suzy Favor had a bad day in 1987 after finishing 2nd as a freshman but might have still been top 10 for her.
I guess not. Just checked. The winner that year was Kim Betz of Indiana.

More or less. I was in early high school and not following running that much. Up until that point about all I knew about runners was Frank Shorter winning the Olympics, some guy that had run under 4 minutes in the mile in high school and later running world records and Prefontaine dying in the car accident. When nationals were going to be in Madison in 1978, our high school coach encouraged us to go and kept telling us about this Henry Rono guy that had set four world records that summer. So we were focusing on him and the Badgers and none of us knew who the Oregon guy was. As I got more into running I started learning who the top runners were and the history of the sport.
Malmo, not every 14 year old kid had a subscription to Track and Field News. And of course there was no internet. I'm near the same age and only knew Salazar from winning the New York Marathon because I had The Runner and Runners World out there.
They didn't sell Track and Field News at my magazine store at the mall.
I hadn't even had heard of Pre until about 1985 when Runners World had a 10 or 15 year anniversary issue.
My high school coach in 1985 gave me photo copies of old Track and Field News high school lists dating back to 1973. From that I know he was among the epic all time high school class. Rudy Chapa, Hulst, Mchesney, Alan Scharsu was a junior.
But I can easily imagine a young kid not knowing who the hell Alberto Salazar was in 1978.
Not to totally hijack the thread, but on a similar note: who has been an all american in all 3 seasons, all 4 years? I know in D3 Carter Hamill did it, but I don't think she was the first. Anyone do it in D1, if not who has been closest (ie 11/12 seasons or 10/12 seasons)? I doubt anyone has done it in other sports, but if you know of one I would be interested.
