This is a little off topic but I'm impressed with Mark Amirault's 27th place finish. I was a freshmen in his conference his senior year and I always expected big things from him. Happy to see he is healthy and running well.

three levels HS, Collegiate and PROs it's a bigger step up than I think all of us understand not everyone has it. Excited for Chris derrick though he should be very pleased with his race today

I didn't know that about Chad.

For the person who gave the example of runners who have faired well, I am not saying all footlocker champs perform poorly (you forgot Goucher in your list, btw). But recent winners have (dating back to 2002). I think it probably has to do with the fact that recent winners probably run A TON in high school, and max out a little earlier then earlier champs.

He beat Craig Forys today and he beat him at Footlockers four years ago.

His training in HS was very good under his father and Irv Ray who is coaching Him now at UC Riverside. But 100 mile weeks at altitude in very hilly terrain and training with his brother at times, I would imagine that training stimulus is far better than many would ever see at the collegiate level.

No knock on Chad, he just he took advantage of the training advatages earlier.

This puts into perspective how good Kennedy, Goucher, Torres, Ritz and Solinsky really were. But it really shows how tough it is to come from dominating high school to being a top collegiate runner. These are some guys that have talent, coaching, some level of durability and the ability to suffer. Amazing. I don't think there is a formula for predicting greatness.

Chris Derrick has had a great career, people forget about him. And Luke Puskedra was from that same class and has had great success for four years. People just see the failures and forget that some of these guys continue to be good at the high collegiate level.

Forys was virtually brought back from the dead by Gibby.

Also note that Derrick ran and easily won NXN–both individual & team titles over Colby Lowe who has two top-10 finishes–his senior year. Given the championship scheduling, Derrick ran hard four straight weeks in four different states to accomplish this feat. More remarkably, his state meet may have been one week earlier in which he debatably took down Craig Virgin's storied state meet record. If I'm correct about the scheduling, that would make five hard races in five straight weekends in five different states!

That was a great year for HS XC. German was the FL favorite with Derrick, Puskedra, Lowe, and Fout following. Fout's victory–I think he also won FL Midwest over Derrick– in such a loaded field was considered a huge upset.

This. This idea that people who ran more miles in high school have tapped there potential is just wrong.

Good if you are running 100 miles a week in high school. There is plenty places to take your training if you are already able to handle 100 miles week. 100 mile weeks could be seen as just a pre-req to good training.

A good coach would know how to work with a runner who has already been running big miles. They should be excited that they know they already have a runner who will be able to handle 10 mile tempo runs and 8 by 1 mile reps. All the longer quality work that shows results. The pace just gets faster.

People get faster off of consistent training, not just that 10 mile bump up in mileage each year. In fact. A coach should say, "look this kid was able to handle 100 miles a week his senior year in high school. That's good. That show durability for the training i want him to do." THe coach should also think "the first year of 100 mile weeks are development time. if i can have him hold that same 100 mile week every year, even for the next 10 years, the athlete is going to get better and better as long as the quality of workout goes up." 100 mile weeks are going to provide sufficient stimulus regardless of how long you have been doing them. on top of that. if you have already been doing them even for 2 years in high school, you probably are not seeing the real benefit of them yet. you figure out a way to consistently hold them and then you develop.

Look at rupp, ritz. Ritz mileage is maybe only 20 mile more than he was doing in high school and that is bc he is going the marathon. the best coaches know it is consistent year in and year out training that does the job, not just the ability of add more stimulus with more miles.
