This. This idea that people who ran more miles in high school have tapped there potential is just wrong.
Good if you are running 100 miles a week in high school. There is plenty places to take your training if you are already able to handle 100 miles week. 100 mile weeks could be seen as just a pre-req to good training.
A good coach would know how to work with a runner who has already been running big miles. They should be excited that they know they already have a runner who will be able to handle 10 mile tempo runs and 8 by 1 mile reps. All the longer quality work that shows results. The pace just gets faster.
People get faster off of consistent training, not just that 10 mile bump up in mileage each year. In fact. A coach should say, "look this kid was able to handle 100 miles a week his senior year in high school. That's good. That show durability for the training i want him to do." THe coach should also think "the first year of 100 mile weeks are development time. if i can have him hold that same 100 mile week every year, even for the next 10 years, the athlete is going to get better and better as long as the quality of workout goes up." 100 mile weeks are going to provide sufficient stimulus regardless of how long you have been doing them. on top of that. if you have already been doing them even for 2 years in high school, you probably are not seeing the real benefit of them yet. you figure out a way to consistently hold them and then you develop.
Look at rupp, ritz. Ritz mileage is maybe only 20 mile more than he was doing in high school and that is bc he is going the marathon. the best coaches know it is consistent year in and year out training that does the job, not just the ability of add more stimulus with more miles.
