Background: I'm a senior in college who's never lifted. I've put in over 100mpw, and my best distance is 3000m, but I can run well at everything from 1500m up through 10k cross. The thing that limits me in the 1500m/mile is my speed. I'm great at grinding it out, but I always get outsprinted the last 100-200m against 1500m specialists since I can only run about 53.x for 400m. I'm looking to improve my speed this winter through lifting and a lot of short sprints. I've spent two weeks in the weight room and am making noticeable gains in strength every time (haven't increased weight, lifting just feels much easier). Another 2 months of this and I'll be MUCH stronger than I was in previous years. I already feel lighter on my feet, like I'm getting more power from each pushoff. I've got to think this will help me come track season, but I'm wondering by how much? Anyone have any anecdotes of how much lifting will help a miler who's never lifted before or how much lifting will improve speed for someone who's never lifted before?
Really any info or stories you can give would be helpful. Thanks.
