How devastating is it to find out your high school teenage daughter is having sex?

"Adolescent sexuality" is not an aberration. Its a normal part of the maturing process.

Tell your friend to join the real world, make sure his daughter has plenty of condoms, and that they are used.

Aww :( I feel bad for the guy. I think if the girl recognizes she made a mistake and feels bad about it, then I think that could possibly cheer him up.

Ask him if he'd prefer to be one of the millions of parents whose teenage daughters are having sex and do NOT know about it. At least he can take this opportunity to impress upon her the importance of taking the proper precautions to prevent an unwanted STD and pregnancy.

Which leads me to a related question. Why don't parents show the same degree of concern about their sexually active teenage sons?

The "real world" is an overused, cliché term that people like to spout off on the internet (along with terms like "ignortant" and "climb out from under a rock").

If by "real", you mean actual people, then the majority of people that I know consider premarital sex to be (if not immoral) highly impractical, unintelligent, and generally an immature decision.

I don't know what part of the world you're from, but your ideal of normal is very different than mine, and I believe most people (NOT most people on the internet by the way -- they are not representative of the population at large).
