Is he retiring from running or from his budding career as an author?
Thus sayeth the quote, "I am retiring from elite racing but I am not done running. Not by a long shot! I am looking forward to new starting lines and joining the millions of runners who find inspiring reasons to run that do not include Olympic berths or even personal bests. Those days might be behind me but I feel like my running career is just beginning. I am a runner. That will never change."
I'll send him a list of fun runs in his area.
Also he'll want to have the Galloway beginning runner's schedule.
IT A WHOLE NEW WORLD OUT THERE, ADAM!
It appears that he isn't running the Trials marathon because he has to have surgery to fix a bum knee, for those of you who don't want to read it.
Wow. Best of luck in the future, Adam.
he should take on Max King, trail races, and ultras!
Didn't he just qualify for the OTM with a half in 64?

Yep, but his knee is jacked (per the blog post) and he's realized he needs to change things up. I'm impressed with what he came back with; too bad he wasn't able to give it one last hurrah at the OT's.
Best of luck Adam, you've had a long, successful career (despite the bumps in the road)!
You've got to be kidding me. Thought for sure this was a troll attempt. I was so psyched for this guy coming back and going out on his own terms. Super misfortune.
He could still watch the end of the trials and flip off everyone as they cross the finish line

Within a week I should be able to start some gentle cross training, and within four weeks I will be able to begin some easy running. There is not enough time. There will be no Olympic Trials marathon in January. That is one starting line I will not make."

My thoughts are Adam should still run the Marathon Trials realistically the guy could go 2:15 or so which would not be a bad showing it would also be a solid way to go out and who knows he may enjoy marathoning and be solid at it.
Best of luck in what ever you do Adam its been a heck of a career for you regardless.
God Bless you and your young family.
Footlocker champion way back in 1993.
NCAA cross country champion way back in 1998.
US 5000 Olympic trials champion way back in 2000.
He was a US champ as recently as 2006.
Helluva career. He will always be remembered in my neck of the woods as a winner.
Thanks for the memories and the inspiration.
Sad to hear. He had a pretty turbulent career and probably never got to run to his potential (13:10 while running on a stress fracture?), but he is still one of America's best distance runners of the last twenty years and his name will stand out in American distance running history for quite some time. Love him or hate him, he was incredibly passionate about the sport and always entertaining to watch. I hope he can find happiness in living a simpler life. Best of luck to him.

It's a beautifully written piece, with hard-earned wisdom and self-awareness.
I just realized that I first met Adam twenty years ago this month. Gosh, it doesn't seem that long.
Wow, how sad. I was looking forward to him running the trials like a madman and just hovering with whoever was in third until he couldn't hang anymore, having him fall off with like 2 miles to go and then making some insane surge over the final 800 to nip third at the line.
Best of luck with the surgery and in the rest of your life Adam!!
I just interviewed Adam and Tim about their book and he hinted at health issues, but nothing this serious.
I would have liked to see him run the trials. Oh well.
Wow, what a shame. Cartilage damage in the knee, torn meniscus, the whole deal. Sad to see him go, but what a great career.
