Just how much time did he take off? A guess some sort of blog will be posted on Letsrun in regards to how he trained.
Whatever he ends up running - the airplane at the finish is an absolute MUST.

A LOT can happen to a guy in 7 years. I don't know if he's fat or what. If I were betting, I'd guess he could get under 18 minutes, but it wouldn't shock me if he couldn't.
Come on! I am a 43 year old guy who last competed seriously in 1986, have been training seriously for just 10 weeks, weigh 191 lbs, have done nothing but base work, and I an hoping to dip under 20 minutes for 5K this weekend. You can do better than 18 minutes Michael Stember!
I ran for 3 years total. 2 years of track in high school and 1 year of junior college and my best 5,000 was 15:50 and best 10k was 32:30. I never broke 4:00 for 1,500.
I had stopped running for 7 years running and on a whim, with no training went and ran a 5k on a fairly hilly road course in San Diego in 18:40 (coming in second in a fairly small race). I weighed about 185 pounds. I was not training at all other than an exercise bike and weightlifting.
It hurt and I was very sore for several days afterward.
My point is that if I could do that, and I did not have any talent comparable to Mr. Stember, then surely he could easily break 18:00, especially with 7 weeks of training. I would almost be willing to bet he will be under 16:00 with elite genetics that he has.
How can you know that he has elite genetics? What if he hasn't been biking and exercising like you have?

Probably hasn't, he's still too busy being Alan Webbs butler.
He'll go 6:00-6:00-4:30-:30 for a 17:00 5K. Kicks it in from 1.1 miles out, which will be epic.
I was a former 3:40 1500 guy. At age 37, after years of inactivity, I ran for ten weeks and managed to run a 17 minute 5k. Stember is a lot more talented than I was - I wouldn't bet against him under any circumstance.
Of course Stember can break 18 for the 5k unless he has gained serious weight.
8 weeks of training is plenty of time to get into that level of fitness, especially for a former 3:35 1500m guy.
I do not have nearly the same PRs (4:26 and 9:23 in high school) and ran a 16:24 5K road race after several years off from running, after 8 weeks of training at 20-25 mpw
I'm going to say no but close. A 18:15

But were you COMPLETELY inactive?

Anyone who can run 3:35 or thereabout for a 1,500 is genetically gifted. An elite runner. Far, far more than me. I ran my times at 150 lbs. If I can run 18:40 with virtually no training other than moderate weightlifting and less moderate exercise biking, and weighed 35 pounds more, then my bet is he could run what I did with almost no training at all. He has already said he would have 7 weeks of training. With that much time and that much talent, 18:00 should be like a jog in the park.
That would be an unreal finish to watch if it actually unfolds like that, however, I don't think it will. I hear he's been sick recently and not training. Would love to see that guy have to go sub-5 minutes in the last mile to break 18.
If he's within striking distance (18:15 pace), I bet he gets it. Love him, or hate him, the guy was a beast with a devastating kick back in the day.
This is some major sandbagging. 16:50
Funny that this is being presented as some long-lost return to running for him... I realize it's all in the name of raising money, but it's a bit far fetched for those with a memory.
He "retired" in 2004, but then came back in 2007 and had a buildup:

But then that fell off and he went off the radar.
He'd have to be eating Lays and drinking Bud all day to not be able to run a decent time. If he doesn't break 18min, it will be his choice to jog the race.
All said, this seems like another funny chapter of the Stember story!

Really? I think he's doing ok in the genetics department.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev5vqqs6MEE18:00? Not a problem for Mike. having raced and trained with him for several years he'll clock a 17:30 easy with some regular running. Billy Mills will be proud of his donation to charity. The real question is whether he will show up at the J-high alumni run?

What does that have to do with genetics?
he has to win the bet to raise the money, I think, so he's taking an easy bet and knows that he can do this in his sleep. 8 weeks of training? A talent like Stember could run sub 16 on eight weeks of training with little difficulty.
