I think top3 at NCAA cross is near on impossible with the depth, while hitting an olympic standard from 800-marathon is much more achieveable for quite afew top class runners who run in the collegiate system.

Hitting the Olympic standard is a lot different then being in the final. If a guy's PR is 3:35 for 1500 (or 1:46 for 800m) do you really think he'll make it to the final? probably not. That's if he even makes it through the trials.
Same thing with the Marathon. I bet quite a few top tier collegiates could run 2:19 for the Marathon... doesnt mean they'll actually get top 3 at the Trials, or even be within 10 minutes of the leaders at the Olympics.

yeah you're saying two completely different things there. I can't think of anyone in the NCAA who could make an Olympic final right now (if this was last year, Centro), but 3 will be top 3 in XC.
