Put them in a bag and get them as smelly as possible. Never take the spikes out until they get too dull to cut unprotected flesh.
Leave the spikes in and make sure you tighten them before the race so you don't lose any.
I always take the hose to them after meets. I have one of those high pressure attachments on mine, that gets most of the mud off.
I'm a running nerd, I scrub them with a nail brush and soap too. It helps get the mud off of the individual studs. I hate putting on dirty spikes before a race.
