Obviously he isn't counting the morning ten miler, or warm ups and cool downs.
True about Lawi. That is what that whole team does. That is why they suck ass except for one superstud. No coaching whatsoever! 50mwp is not nearly enough unless you are ridiculously talented. If you are "only" an 8:55-9:05 3200m guy from the US, chances are you wont be nearly as good as you could be.
I have a friend that runs there, he says they run 35-50mpw and do miler oriented training year round. Which is why they blow as a team and have insanely talented Kenyans run well (Lawi, Sambu) Abysmal coaching for white kids.
Kind of adds to the debate about Kenyan vs. White talent, doesn't it?

just based on the facts in this thread? no, it does not add to it. not enough supporting evidence or analysis
Funny, there's been more discussion about the trials and tribulations of Verzbicas than about this phenomenal Kenyan runner.
Does anyone know his story? How long in the state, how did Coach Li find him? Raced in Kenya? Relatives in the sport? Is he from the Rift Valley area? So far, 3 races, 3 huge wins and 3 course records. Wow.

He learned his training from Miles Batty. They are both low milage guys.
exactly
And people still kid themselves that genetics do not play a part and 10,000 hours of hard work is all you need for success in distance running.
He is coached by James Li, so why is this surprising? The fact that his guys run relatively low milage has been discussed ad nauseum.
James Li trains everyone like Bernard Lagat... 50MPW of intensity. Obviously, it works for Africans.
According to some posters on this MB, 50 is too much. Why they can run low 14's (and they aren't even that talented) on only 30 mpw.
Do I sound sarcastic? I don't want to be, but there must be a lot of trolls making unrealistic claims.
But to be fair, unlike our 20 mpw 14 minute 5k guys here on the website, Lalang only just started running last year. So, you can understand how he would run only 23:10 by himself on a windy day despite running so many miles per week.
The only reason these Kenyans are so good is because they are tough. If you want to run like the Africans, then you have to be tougher than them, It's simple. Some people are high mileage people and some are low.
You know that troll who comes on here and asks if he can go 14:00 for a 5K on 40mpw? I think Lawi has been having some fun with us...
Phenomenal performance. I can't wait to see what he does on the track this year.
I am that troll. Mileage is overrated if you have the quality. Lalang trains plenty hard based on that schedule. 50 mpw is not that low. An extra 30 mpw wouldn't do much, especially slow mileage.
of course genetics play an essential role. You still need to do the work, otherwise people with equally good genes will
outrun you.
