Just ran the Chicago marathon and PRed with a 2:58. Average heart rate was 179, I'm pretty sure my max is around 203, so this is 90% of max, which seems very very high. What I'm trying to figure out is this: is my ability to sustain 90% of max heart rate over the marathon an indicator that I was very fit for the race? Or could it mean that I wasn't recovered enough for the race? This was my third marathon. I was relatively well-trained going in, averaged around 90 mpw and hit 100 a couple weeks (highest mileage ever before was around 80 miles a week). Didn't do as many long runs as I have in the past, and generally just didn't feel that great going in to the race. Hit the wall pretty hard at around mile 23, my last 5k was 7:11 pace, with heart rate around 183. Anyone have any input/advice? Should I be worried?
Thanks...
