No, I'm 6 ft. 172 and just ran 2:21 for the marathon. I have also run sub 14:40 for 5k so trust me, as long as you are healthy, in shape and strong you can compete just fine.

I'm relatively skinny. I don't lift weights. I have a low body fat percentage.
Still am I too large for distance?
I'm 6'3" 182 pounds and most people call me skinny. I had a teammate in high school that was the same height as me but he was 135 pounds, I beat him every race.
You are the real big mzungu. Hopefully you'll line up against Mottram and Solinski some day and make them look small.
I was 6'3 170-175 when I raced all through college. Ran 14:32, 24:28, and 68:50. Not great by a long shot but there were still guys a lot thinner than me on my team behind me. I at least always felt strong.
Peter Snell was 5-10 175 lbs.
Just go run.
you're too big to be really, really good at really long distances.
Junior year of HS I was 5'2'' and 142 lbs and could not run a full mile without stopping.
Senior year of college I ran 17:30/35:55
Those are not brag-worthy by a long shot but I guarantee you I was worse off than you are haha
well i might be an also ran, packfill, slow turd, whatever you want to call it.....but i do ok, and i'm same exact numbers as the OP....well, 173 on a good day, 172 on a great day.
cheers, dude-
Both of the top guys on each of the two college teams I ran for were huge by distance running standards. One of the guys was 6'1 and 180, then the other guy was 6'5 and 200! The 6'1 guy was a JUCO all-american, while the 6'5 guy was a 27:2X guy. You are definitely not too big.
